Identification, Long-Run Relations, and Fundamental Innovations in a Simple Cointegrated System
This paper examines the roles played by innovations identified from a simple four-variable VAR characterized by cointegration. Using knowledge of cointegration rank and “textbook” relations that link macroeconomic aggregates, we identify distinct “real” and “nominal” innovations that dictate the long-run behavior of the model. We also examine the explanatory power of transitory innovations that are orthogonal to these permanent shocks. One of the…
Two-Step and Related Estimators in Contemporary Rational-Expectations Models
This article examine the performance of ordinary least squares, generalized least squares, and Pagan's (1986) double-length estimator (DLE) in several rational-expectations models The three approaches are equivalent in the simplest of models but may differ appreciably in models typically encountered in applied work. Small-sample properties of the estimators are examined in several contemporary macroeconomic models. The following conclusions are r…
Long-Run Income and Interest Elasticities of Money Demand in the United States
This study investigates the stability of long-run log-linear demand functions for narrowly defined monetary aggregates (M1, Monetary Base) in the U.S. during the post World War II period. The hypotheses that the individual time series which appear in such equations (real M1, real Monetary Base, real Personal Income and short-term and long-term nominal interest rates) all have unit roots cannot be rejected. The primary conclusion of this study is …
Seniority Rules and Productivity
The primary purpose of this paper is to test empirically the effect of labor quality on short-run manufacturing productivity. In doing so, the study makes major advances in two areas. For the first time, a job tenure function is estimated, and a time series of job tenure in manufacturing is developed. This estimated tenure series empirically verifies the use of seniority rules in the firm-worker employment relationship. Having generated a tenure …
Two-Step Generalized Least Squares Estimators in Multi-Equation Generated Regressor Models
Despite the critical analysis of Pagan (1984) and several subsequent applied studies, empirical models characterized by expectations are often estimated with regressor proxies that are treated as ordinary nonstochastic This paper offers a Generalized Least Squares estimator designed to cope with the nonscalar disturbance matrix precipatated by generated The approach is designed as a natural extension of Pagan's analysis and the author demonstrate…
An Econometric Investigation of the Monetary Neutrality and Rationality Propositions from an International Perspective

Bukharin's Theory of Equilibrium
This essay will attempt to assess the validity of Nikolai Bukharin's “theory of equilibrium,” a theory that was central to one of the most extensive philosophical debates in the history of the international socialist movement. The historical importance of Bukharin, as editor of Pravda, Izvestia, and Bolshevik, as a member of the Russian Politburo and as President of the Comintern, is well documented. His theoretical work, less appreciated today, …
