Scalability of an Evidence-Based Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program
Objectives. To determine if the Teen Outreach Program (TOP), a youth development and service learning program, can reduce sexual risk-taking behaviors compared with a business as usual or benign counterfactual. This paper reviews the changing strategies for both process and outcome evaluations of teen pregnancy prevention programs over the past few decades. The Case of Top Beginnings and the Missing Child Outcomes is a fictionalized case study of a set of evaluation challenges faced in evaluating comprehensive initiatives that are seeking to build systems. Changes in Menstrual Symptoms among Sterilized and Comparison Women
Changes in menstrual parameters after tubal sterilization were analyzed in ethnically diverse, poor women from three geographic areas in the United States. Two large suitable comparison groups were similarly studied. Menstrual cycles, duration of menstrual flow, and bleeding between periods were unchanged in the sterilization and comparison groups. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea increased in 10.8% of sterilized women, compared with 2.1% in the co…

This research tests the utility of Kristin Luker's cost-benefit theory for adding to explanations of pregnancy risk taking among teenagers. The data come from interviews with 425 teen women in New York. The findings offer support for the Luker model since in an equation also including background variables and level of ego development, four of the six Luker variables (the subjective probabilities of pregnancy and abortion and the disadvantages of …
Social and Psychological Perspectives on Voluntary Sterilization
This paper reviews social science research on the antecedents and consequences of voluntary sterilization. The major conclusions are that socioeconomic status has little impact on the decision to be sterilized and that sterilizations are rare among those without sons and among male non-whites. Significant others are important sources of encouragement and information, and good marital relations increase the likelihood of having the procedure perfo…
