A Tutorial on Aligning Questions and Models in Causal Mediation Analysis
This tutorial offers practical guidance on causal mediation analysis for observational studies, emphasizing the critical alignment of research questions, causal estimands, and statistical models. Through educational research examples, the tutorial addresses analytical challenges, such as distinguishing between full and partial mediation, controlling for confounders, and avoiding collider bias. The tutorial demonstrates how to employ appropriate s…
Estimation of comparable standardized mean differences in cluster randomized trials with covariate adjustment
Standardized mean differences (SMDs) are widely used to quantify treatment effects in cluster‐randomized trials. However, covariate adjustment in hierarchical linear models reduces the residual variance components used for standardization, which artificially inflates effect size estimates and undermines comparability across studies. We propose a unified family of estimators that recover the unadjusted variance components by rescaling the covariat…
Examining the Associations Between Childhood Trauma, Resilience, and Depression: A Multivariate Meta-Analysis
Topic of review: Childhood trauma has been associated with increased depression; however, resilience has been found to reduce this association. Method of review: Present analyses were based on multivariate meta-analytical techniques, an extension of univariate meta-analysis. All computations were performed using the metafor package and the metaRmat package from R. Bivariate associations ( r) between trauma, resilience, and depression were utilize…
Student self-ratings of social-emotional competencies: Dimensional structure and outcome associations of the WCSD-Seca among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White boys and girls in elementary through high s…
Exploring the summer reading effect through visual analysis of multiple datasets
Historically, there has been concern about students losing reading ability over extended breaks from school, commonly in the summer, but studies of this phenomenon have produced inconsistent results. We applied exploratory visual analysis of multiple datasets to examine whether students in Grades K‐5 appear to lose or improve in various reading abilities over the summer and across consecutive school years. Archival data were obtained on students …
Reproducible Analyses in Education Research
A reproducible analysis is one in which an independent entity, using the same data and the same statistical code, would obtain the exact same result as the previous analyst. Reproducible analyses utilize script-based analyses and open data to aid in the reproduction of the analysis. A reproducible analysis does not ensure the same results are obtained if another sample of data is obtained, often referred to as replicability. Reproduction and repl…
Comprehensive Meta-Analysis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Psychosocial Treatments Investigated Within Between Group Studies
Interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) include positive behavior supports (e.g., parent training, school-based contingency management, behavioral peer interventions), training interventions (e.g., organizational skills training, social skills training, etc.), and other interventions (e.g., academic accommodations/modifications, self-monitoring). There is a need to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of psychosocial tr…

The writing abilities of juvenile justice youths: A confirmatory factor analysis
To better understand the writing skills of juvenile offenders and the components of their writing abilities, this study explored extant data from six measures of adolescents’ writing skills administered upon their entrance into a juvenile justice facility. Overall, the 235 students (ages 13–16; Grades 5–11) exhibited low scores on all writing measures, but there was a wide range in their performance with some students scoring at or near ceiling. …
Doing Identity Work and Risky Endeavors? A Qualitative Research Synthesis of Predominantly White, Middle-Class Parents’ Decision Making in the Context of Urban School Choice
The inversion hypothesis popularized by Ehrenhalt posits that recent urban migration trends in the United States constitute a reversal of the late 20th-century model of middle-class White flight to the suburbs and an urban core inhabited by a mostly working-class, minority population. The hypothesized blurring of the urban–suburban divide has led to calls that policymakers must seize the opportunity to foster racially and economically diverse urb…
Extracting the Variance Inflation Factor and Other Multicollinearity Diagnostics from Typical Regression Results
Multicollinearity is a potential problem in all regression analyses. However, the examination of multicollinearity is rarely reported in primary studies. In this article we discuss and show several post hoc methods for assessing multicollinearity. One such multicollinearity diagnostic is the variance inflation factor. We outline the post hoc variance inflation factor method, which computes the variance inflation factor from the standardized regre…
Classroom Management Self-Efficacy and Burnout: A Multivariate Meta-analysis
Measurement of the bystander intervention model for bullying and sexual harassment
Although peer bystanders can exacerbate or prevent bullying and sexual harassment, research has been hindered by the absence of a validated assessment tool to measure the process and sequential steps of the bystander intervention model. A measure was developed based on the five steps of Latané and Darley’s (1970) bystander intervention model applied to bullying and sexual harassment. Confirmatory factor analysis with a sample of 562 secondary sch…

Risk Information Seeking and Processing Model: A Meta-Analysis
This study relies on state-of-the-art meta-analytical techniques to assess overall effects of the Risk Information Seeking and Processing (RISP) model. The results support the utility of the RISP model in predicting risk information seeking and systematic processing. However, the model demonstrated limited explanatory power for heuristic processing. A reduced model composed of only 2 variables—current knowledge and informational subjective norms—…
The Synthesis of Partial Effect Sizes
In this article we focus on three partial effect sizes for the correlation (r) family of effects: the standardized slope (b), the partial correlation (rp), and the semi-partial correlation (rsp). These partial effect sizes are useful for meta-analyses in two common situations: when primary studies reporting regression models do not report bivariate correlations, and when it is of specific interest to partial out the effects of other variables. We…
An Empirical Investigation of Partial Effect Sizes in Meta-Analysis of Correlational Data
The partial correlation and the semi-partial correlation can be seen as measures of partial effect sizes for the correlational family. Thus, both indices have been used in the meta-analysis literature to represent the relationship between an outcome and a predictor of interest, controlling for the effect of other variables in the model. This article evaluates the accuracy of synthesizing these two indices under different situations. Both partial …
The Door-in-the-Face Persuasive Message Strategy: A Meta-Analysis of the First 35 Years
A random-effects meta-analysis was undertaken to examine the effectiveness of the Door-in-the-Face (DITF) persuasive message strategy on compliance. Results indicate an overall significant effect of the DITF strategy on verbal compliance (k=78, r=.126), but an insignificant effect for behavioral compliance (k=39, r=.052). In terms of verbal compliance, the DITF strategy works significantly better than controls for different samples, across varied…
Teacher Verbal Ability and School Outcomes: Where Is the Evidence
Many have claimed that teachers’ verbal ability is among the most important predictors of school outcomes. Teachers’ verbal ability has been thought to predict student achievement ever since the relationship was found in the classic Equality of Educational Opportunity (EEO) study by Coleman et al. By way of meta-analysis the authors examine the evidence on teachers’ verbal ability as a predictor of school outcomes. They find that the evidence is …
