A Self-Regulated Learning Perspective on Smartphone Presence, Usage, and Multitasking While Studying
The implications of the presence and usage of smartphone technology in learning contexts are not fully understood. Self-regulated learning (SRL) theory offers a framework in which smartphone use can be explored. The current study seeks to extend our understanding of the role of the smartphone while studying through a qualitative thematic analysis of responses to open-ended questions regarding smartphone use. A sample of 210 college students respo…
Critical Mixed Methods: The Imperative for Critical Inquiry and Reflexivity in Research
Mixed methods research (MMR) combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, enabling researchers to achieve a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of social phenomena. This integration is crucial because it allows for a richer exploration of complex issues and has evolved to incorporate social justice work. However, there are also concerns that the use of MMR is merely a token of recognition when working with “emic perspectives” as pla…
Autism Spectrum Disorder and Remote Learning: Parents’ Perspectives on Their Child’s Learning at Home
The sudden change in educational setting during the COVID-19 pandemic naturally raised questions about students’ educational attainment. Access to in person teaching and special education services became restrictive and parents had to consider becoming more involved in their child’s academic attainment. This exploratory case study examined parents’ experiences in providing support to their child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during quaranti…

Educational Research in the Internet Age: Examining the Role of Individual Characteristics
The use of the Web and other computer-based technologies in classrooms has become quite prevalent. Previous Research News and Comment discussions have presented the opportunities for research and practice that accompany these relatively new tools for classrooms. This article presents a perspective that has garnered less attention in discussions of these new learning environments—learner characteristics. Contemporary theories in educational psycho…
Epistemological Beliefs and Reflective Judgement
We tested the hypothesis that 4 epistemological beliefs, i.e., beliefs about the nature and acquisition of knowledge, proposed by Schommer in 1990, were related to observed differences in epistemological reasoning. Based on their responses to a philosophical dilemma, 125 college undergraduates and graduate students were assigned to 1 of 7 levels of the Reflective Judgement Model by Kitchener and King. 4 independent epistemological beliefs were us…
