Coding for Correlation and Regression
Data coding for analyzing the relationships between variables can often be a critical step relative to tests of significance or interpretation of regression coefficients. Resultant correlations can sometimes range from "trivial" to "large" depending on the data and the methods of coding. This paper focuses on the procedures available for substituting a special predictive coding method for some of the more complex general regression procedures
Stepwise Regression for Mixed Mode Predictor Variables
MULTIPLE regression studies requiring subsets of predictors from a much larger pool of variables can be handled ordinarily by step-wise procedures. Problems arise, however, if the pool of predictor variables contains both multiple level categorical as well as con-tinuous modes of measurement. Stepwise routines, as currently con-stituted, consider each predictor vector in turn and accept or reject it according to the statistical criteria employed.…

Analysis of Length-of-Stay Data with Incomplete Observations
Length-of-stay data of the type used as criteria for assessing various kinds of treatment programs poses a number of data analysis problems due to Ss becoming lost to follow-up, unresponsive Ss being withdrawn at the end of the study, Ss entering the study sequentially, and observations being arbitrarily truncated at some time point for purposes of analysis. Such data are often described as data containing ‘censored’ observations. Techniques for …
Analysis of Factor Variance
The analysis of factor variance is a multivariate approach particularly applicable in those instances when the number of variables is large, when the reliabilities of some measures are questionable, when no reasonable a priori combinations of measures exist, and when a search for structure among the measures is a partial objective of the study. The methods of analysis of factor variance, however, allow for a number of important options. Two of th…
Complex Chi-Squares
A matrix formula available for the calculation of complex chi-squares allows several computational variations, each of which requires fewer steps than the standard formula. However, neither the matrix formula nor the associated computational algorithms have been given adequate exposure in statistical texts for the behavioral sciences. This paper reintroduces the formula, expands the notation, and shows how several computational variations can be …

Factor Analysis Of Individual Social Desirability Scale Values
A general social desirability factor emerged at the second-order level when a set of individual social desirability scale values were correlated between subjects (i.e., across items) and factor analysed. However, no such general factor emerged at the second-order level when the individual judgments were correlated between items (i.e., across subjects)
A Factor Analysis Of Individual Social Desirability Scale Values
The factorial structure of individual judgments of social desirability scale value (SDSV) was studied by factor analyzing a 112 (college students) by 100 (MMPI items) data matrix of individual judgments of SDSV in two ways. One analysis was factoring by item (R technique) while the second analysis was factoring by subject (Q technique). A large general SD factor appeared when subject intercorrelations were factored, but no such general factor was…
The Effect Of Group Psychotherapy On Interpersonal Perceptions Of Psychiatric Patients
Matched groups of psychiatric patients were randomly assigned either to small group psychotherapy or to a control condition. The Revised Inter- personal Check List was administered three times (zero, three, and six weeks from the time therapy began) with five instructional sets (I am, Most People are, etc.). The results were first factor analyzed by item in accordance with a model developed by Horst (1963), then factor scores were computed, and f…
Social Desirability Values for California Psychological Inventory Items
Social desirability ratings for CPI items were obtained from 68 female and 59 male college students. Simple means and standard deviations of the ratings were compared with previously published scale values and dispersions in the case of 186 overlapping CPI-MMPI items. The results showed high comparability on scale values so that the simple means of the item ratings may be used similarly to previously published MMPI item values obtained by using s…
An Algebraic Computation of Weights for Thurstone's Analytic Rotation Method
Thurscone (1954) proposed a single-plane analytic method of factor rotation in which each coordinate hyperplane is determined separacely. The solution requires an arbitrary weighting system, and che trial veccors used to approximate the coordinates of the normals to the desired hyperplanes are not obtained analytically; trial vectors are chosen from marker variables in the factor macrix or according to some hypothesis. However, once the weighting…
