Human–vegetation interactions during the Holocene in North America
Between the initial colonization of North America and the European settlement period, Indigenous American land use practices shaped North American landscapes and ecosystems, but a critical question is the extent of these impacts on the land, and how these influenced the distributions of the flora and fauna. The present study addresses this question by estimating the spatial correlation between continental-scale records of fossil pollen and archae…
Rethra – Lieps, am Südende des Tollensesees Retra – Lieps na južni strani jezera Tollensesee
Rethra was an early town center in the region of Redarians. On the basis of written and archaeological sources it is possible to locate this place between the Tollensesee lake and the Uecker river. Quantification and Statistical Analysis of Structural Similarities in Dialectological Area-Class Maps
Dialect atlases comprise considerable numbers of linguistic feature maps, i.e. dialect maps representing one linguistic feature each. Large amounts of data like these are often difficult to handle. This article presents a new quantitative method for the automatic analysis of such large corpora of linguistic feature maps. It makes use of geographical similarities between single maps to establish a system of criteria for structural relatedness. Fur…
