Traveller engagement with aircraft flight tracker applications
In exploring flight trackers through a mobility lens, this study is situated at the nexus of the movements of people and objects, near real-time location-based navigational technologies, cartographic and mobile digital applications, and flows of information. Flight tracking applications (apps), allow users to see where aircraft are at any given moment from digital devices such as smartphones, yet little is known about their use, a gap which this …
Anthem
Nina Simone’s song “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” is a bold statement of self-affirmation, a call to action, and a promise to future generations. According to Shana L. Redmond, it is also an anthem. Redmond’s Anthem: Social Movements and the Sound of Solidarity in the African Diaspora argues that the music most essential to important moments of black diasporic political history is not “a ‘soundtrack’ for the events surrounding it” but a central …
Catholic and Protestant Translations of the Imitatio Christi, 1425-1650
The Imitatio Christi was second only to the Bible in the number of copies made and the variety of languages into which it was translated between the 1430s and the eighteenth century. Facilitated by the copying tradition of the devotio moderna, as many as eight to nine hundred manuscript copies (mostly in the original Latin) may have been produced within a century of its first appearance, and from the 1470s there were rising numbers of printed edi…

Glory, Laud and Honour
In this volume, Professor Parry tries to retrieve ‘the cultural achievements of the Laudian movement’ which he sees as a ‘whole new world of religious art and expression’, ‘an English version of the Counter-Reformation’ in which ‘all the arts collaborated to enhance the setting of worship’ (pp. 190–2, 23). Drawing selectively on a great deal of recent work by scholars on the architecture, sculpture, painting, prose, poetry, and music as well as t…
