America in Italy: The United States in the Political Thought and Imagination of the Risorgimento, 1763–1865, by Axel Körner
In the context of the recent historiography focusing on foreigners’ political imagination of Italy (Maura O’Connor, Paola Gemme), Axel Körner’s book operates an important shift on two accounts. Firstly, Körner distances himself quite radically from the historiographical perspective which analysed Italy and the Italians as the ‘object’ of fascination of foreign writers, where the emphasis was on the travellers’ ‘gaze’ on Italy: in Körner’s book, t…
Reading at the front: Books and soldiers in the First World War
This paper focuses on the reading and educational practices of common soldiers during the First World War. It argues that the question of how war libraries were imagined and constructed by civilians needs to be framed in the larger context of pre-war Edwardian debates surrounding the “value of books” in society. Indeed, it was within this debate that “humanities activists” first sought to play a role in times of crisis, confident that the war lib…
M azzini, G iuseppe (1805–72)
Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian patriot. An exile for most of his life, he fought to free Italy from foreign domination and led the movement for national unification. Mazzini sought to establish a democratic, republican government in Italy, which could provide a model for other nations. Such was the brief experiment of the Roman Republic (1849), which he led. Mazzini had a quasi‐religious faith in the role of the “nation,” able to “associate” its…

Victorian Radicals and Italian Democrats
An examination of the links between radicalism in Victorian England, and the Risorgimento movement in Italy. This book provides powerful new insights into the history of Italy's long Risorgimento, by tracing the entanglements of the Mazzinian "international". This informal group of men and women crossed the boundary of the Channel and the boundary of class to speak a common language and share a radical ideal: Giuseppe Mazzini's vision of a unifie…

Marketing ‘Garibaldi panoramas’ in Britain (1860–1864)
This paper maps the UK itineraries of Garibaldi panoramas from the liberation of the South, in 1860, to Garibaldi's visit to London, in 1864. Garibaldi panoramas’ initial fortunes stemmed from the marketing impresarios’ ability to harness the potential of a form of spectacle that drew its content subject from the accounts of the extraordinary events unrolling in Italy, reported in the press. The paper shows that, while the popularity of the genre…

The Toynbee Travellers' Club and the Transnational Education of Citizens, 1888-90
By focusing on the experience of the first continental tours organised by Toynbee Hall (London’s first University Settlement, in Whitechapel), this paper contributes towards modifying some of the stereotypes associated with the ‘English’, travel and Italy. The case-study here analysed argues that the early guides of the Toynbee Hall Travellers’ Club saw adult education tours as an opportunity to impart a transnational education give British ‘citi…

Mazzini's Transnational Legacy amongst British Co-operators ( c .1885-1949)
This article argues that Mazzini's long influence on twentieth-century British co-operators has until now escaped systematic scrutiny. While the support of British radicals for the Italian Risorgimento revolutionary is well known, labour historians have reserved scant attention to the long legacy of Mazzini's doctrine amongst British co-operators, who, even after the Second World War, still quoted the Italian exile's ideas on association as the b…
Negotiating the ‘Garibaldi moment’ in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1854–1861)
The year of the Risorgimento , 1860, is associated with the ‘Garibaldi moment’, a time when the image of the radical revolutionary appeared to be ‘depoliticised’ in Britain. While recognising such a phenomenon, this article considers whether regional pockets escaped such a trend, analysing the case-study of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where strong links between Garibaldi and local radicals coloured public perceptions of the Italian hero. By scrutinising…
