Was there Economic Decline in Mamluk Egypt in the Late Middle Ages
Did the Egyptian economy decline in the late Middle Ages? This article discusses possible causes for Egypt’s apparent decline: climate, epidemics, breakdown of irrigation agriculture, violence, weak institutions, and a failure to adopt new technology. It argues that the demographic impact of contagion, perhaps exacerbated by climate change, transformed Egypt. Agriculture contracted in step with reduced demand and the manufacturing sector outsourc…
Settling Accounts with the Sultan
On the morning of the tenth of January 1420, four high-ranking Venetian merchants made their way towards the office of the Venetian consul, Biagio Dolfin, in the fondaco in Alexandria, Egypt.1 The four, Carlo Contarini, Lorenzo Bembo, Angelo Michiel, and Polo Michiel then proceeded to copy pages 45, 95 and 111 of the consul's ledger ('libro'). Each of them produced their own copy of these pages and each of them added a note specifying that they h…
The Baltic
On the dustcover, Joachim Whaley rightly calls this book by Michael North a tour de force. It spans over a millennium, from the eighth to the beginning of the twenty-first century and covers the wide array of regions bordering the Baltic Sea. This translation of a revised version of the 2011 Geschichte der Ostsee is a pioneering history of the Baltic Anrainer and their entanglements, which, traditionally, have been treated under the aegis of nati…

Trading Conflicts
Analysing different conflicts in Late Medieval Alexandria, this book offers new insights into the micro-mechanics of Venetian life and trade in Egypt and recalibrates the narrative of the strictly regulated and often violent contacts between East and West. This thorough microanalysis, based on the private archive of a Venetian merchant and consul in Alexandria read in conjunction with other Venetian and Mamluk sources, provides a differentiated i…
