A Fluid Elite? Social Mobility and County Representation in the Reign of Henry VI
Late‐medieval borough representation, perhaps because of its dynamic and varied aspect, has been more intensely studied than that of the counties. The latter have generally been seen as unvaried units of representation, largely dominated, representationally, by the greater gentry who saw election as an important vindication of their local status. This article presents a different perspective, emphasising the physical and social differences betwee…
The Rise of New Boroughs and the Decline of Electoral Localism
The period between the ‘Wonderful Parliament’ of 1386 and the parliament ended by Queen Mary's death in 1558 saw major changes in the composition of the Commons. From the mid 15th century, there was a new and accelerating expansion in the number of seats. Yet, although these new seats extended representation geographically, the Commons, conceived as a group of individual MPs, did not thereby become more geographically representative. The expansio…
Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem and Other Analogous Documents Preserved in the National Archives. Vol. XXIV
These two volumes mark the end of one Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project and the beginning of another. The Calendar is chronologically the third, but, in terms of publication, the fifth, in a series, that extends the printed calendar of inquisitions from 1422 to 1447. It is also the last; and the inquisitions for 1447 to 1485 (the publication of which would complete the series from 1236 to 1509) remain available only in manuscrip…
The English Parliaments of Henry VII, 1485-1504, by P.R. Cavill
Original, insightful, elegantly written in a sparse style, this is a fine book, and, as the book of a thesis, an outstanding one. The author sets himself an arduous task. Henry VII's Parliaments have proved difficult to place in their historical context; satisfactory, seemingly, neither as epilogue to the narrative of the ‘medieval’ Parliament, nor as prologue to that of the Parliaments of later Tudor monarchs. Here Cavill identifies a distorting…
Legal Right and Dispute Resolution in Late Medieval England
THE sale of the castle and lordship of Dunster in Somerset, the caput honoris of the ancient family of Mohun, was one of the most curious land transactions ever made in late medieval England. Large estates were rarely sold, still less those at the heart of historic patrimonies. When such sales did occur, the seller’s motive generally lay in a kinship with the heir remote enough to negate the customary bonds of duty and natural affection between t…
The Reign of Henry IV
This collection of conference papers is a companion volume to Henry IV: The Establishment of the Regime (2003; rev. ante, cxix [2004], 989–91), pursuing the story of the reign into its later years. Its ten essays cover a variety of themes. In the first, Michael Bennett discusses the two acts of succession of 1406, the first, in June, entailing the crown in the male line, the second, in December, restoring the customary understanding that the crow…

Arbitration, perpetual entails and collateral warranties in late‐medieval England
Social mobility, demographic change, and landed society in late medieval England
This paper aims to document the impact of the plague-induced demographic crisis of the second half of the fourteenth and first half of the fifteenth centuries on the succession patterns of the English landed aristocracy and to show that while these changed succession patterns both increased the wealth of the established families that survived the plague and encouraged upward mobility into the landed class they were particularly important in promo…
