John Florio was unusually cosmopolitan. 1 He was born in London around 1552 to an unidentified Italian or French mother and the Florentine reformed minister and language tutor, Michelangelo Florio. Michelangelo had come to the Protestant haven of Edward VI's England just two years earlier after escaping execution at the hands of the Inquisition in Rome. British Privateering Voyages of the Eighteenth Century, by Tim Beattie
Tim Beattie’s book is firmly centred around the infamous exploits of William Dampier, Woodes Roger and the combined Clipperton and Shelvocke expedition. The main purpose of each of these well-known trans-oceanic adventures was, primarily, the pursuit of treasure by ‘merchant mariners of desperate fortune’ (p. 1). From the outset, then, the scene is set for a well-researched rip-roaring series of adventures which reflect some serious scholarly end…
Scottish involvement in the Swedish Riksdag of the seventeenth century
This article discusses the role of one migrant ethnic group (in this case the Scots) and follows its involvement in the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) in the Swedish in the early modern period. It seeks to establish whether the Scots used their ethnicity to form a particular constituency within the Swedish Parliament, or if they had become so well integrated into Swedish society that they sat in the Riksdag as Swedes regardless of their ethnic link…

This article discusses recent developments in the field of Scottish relations with Europe in the early modern period. It does so in two sections; firstly by précising some of the important scholarship conducted in this field over the last decade. This has revealed in greater depth the important military, diplomatic and commercial links one small Atlantic nation had with her European neighbours. The second section of the article flags up the bigge…
Military Governors and Imperial Frontiers C. 1600-1800
The Good, the Bad and the Anonymous
The Dutch Governor of Ambon, Anthonio van den Heuvel, once wrote 'wild men such as those of Scotland and Ireland are also found throughout the islands of India, especially on Ceylon and many other islands within the territory of the Tarnatan King, namely on the coast of Batochina'.1 Van den Heuvel was obviously comparing dwellers of the islands mentioned with Gaels from Scotland and Ireland as opposed to suggesting that the East Indies were awash…
