Assessing the Long-Term Stability of the Spielberger State-Trait Inventory Trait Scale over 3.5 Years
The Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is the most cited measure of state and trait anxiety, and is routinely employed in a variety of research and clinical contexts. Here, we investigate the temporal stability as well as the convergent and discriminant validity of the German version of the STAI trait scale (STAI-T) across multiple time points in two independent samples (105 and 120 Caucasians). We observed temporal stabilities of .…

Introduction
In a memorandum submitted to Germany’s Catholic bishops in 1905, the Jesuit priest Hermann Krose called for the establishment of a central statistical office in the Catholic Church. Krose was strongly influenced by the ideas of the Belgian astronomer and statistician Alphonse Quetelet (1796–1874). According to Quetelet, the behaviour of individuals in a given social context displayed a certain probability to commit crime, suicide or other social …

The Great War and German Memory
The treatment of disabled veterans of the First World War in Germany is not uncharted territory. A number of studies have explored the tensions which arose when the new Weimar Republic, defining itself explicitly as a welfare state, sought to take care of an unprecedented number of veterans with permanent injuries and proved unable to meet expectations, due to financial constraints and the medical experts’ emphasis on making the disabled fit for …

Legislation and Liberalization
Between 1945 and 1975 West Germany became modernized and liberalized. School education was one of the key fields in which this process was played out. Methods of school discipline, corporal punishment in particular, were the subject of heated public debates, reflecting the broader political and moral issues of West German postwar reconstruction. The article examines the debate and its conclusion in the 1970s by focusing on Hesse, the only Land th…
Life after Death
This collection of essays offers a novel approach to the cultural and social history of Europe after the Second World War. In a shift of perspective, it does not conceive of the impressive economic and political stability of the postwar era as a quasi-natural return to previous patterns of societal development but approaches it as an attempt to establish 'normality' upon the lingering memories of experiencing violence on a hitherto unprecedented …
Europa, der Erste Weltkrieg und die Nachkriegszeit
Europe, the First World War, and its Aftermath: A Continuity of Violence? This essay summarizes the contributions of this volume and suggests paths for further research. Political and other violence, rather than resulting from a general «brutalization» of the soldiers on all sides, followed a pattern consistent with Theodor Schieder's threefold typology of the formation of nation-states in modern Europe. Violence was most pronounced in those part…
