King Pym and his ‘Happy, Scrappy Jester’
The Reign of King Pym took mid 17th‐century studies in a new direction when it was published in 1941. Anglo‐American collaboration in the field in the 1920s and 1930s had been rooted in making available in print to a scholarly readership one of the private diaries of the Long Parliament. J.H. Hexter's book, produced at a time when Anglo‐American collaboration was temporarily on hold under pressure of global war, changed the direction of academic …
Theologia Cambrensis
Without doubt this book by D. Densil Morgan aptly fills a gap in the historiography of Welsh religion and theology. It may, as the endorsement on the cover claims, address the fact that Welsh theology is ‘almost unknown outside Wales’; but more certainly it brings into one place a summary of the central ideas of Protestant writers, down to the mid-eighteenth century, which together embody a canon of influential Welsh thinking on religion. The aut…

The Reputation and Authority of the Speaker and the Speakership of the House of Commons, 1640–60
The speakership during the civil war and interregnum has received scant attention by historians. This article considers the occupants of the Speaker's chair as a group, making some observations about their age and background, including within its scope the short‐lived and irregular speakerships of men such as Sir Sampson Eure and Henry Pelham. The popularity of the Speaker within the Commons is found to have depended much on his perceived compete…
