The Faroese Commons and the biodiversity and sustainable development agendas
Since 1992 World Summit in Rio, Sustainable Development and Biodiversity have been the two main agendas which have been developed to counteract the environmental problems resulting from industrial modernisation. Although these agendas should be complementary, there are tensions between them due to a widespread reluctance towards integration. This is especially problematic in relation to many historical productive cultural landscapes. Clear exampl…
Landscape Ecology

New multifunctional hunting landscapes in Denmark
Between 1992 and 2008 subsidization of mandatory set aside land under the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) gave rise to the establishment of a characteristic type of multifunctional hunting landscapes in Denmark, primarily located on fallow land in tilled valley bottoms. A national survey of these landscapes in 2006 has been carried out and 1061 hunting areas have been identified nationwide. Subsidies relating to set aside land acted as a supp…
Gmo neighbourhoods – will co‐existence be a geographically realistic possibility
In Denmark, there has been widespread opposition to the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as a result of which rules have been developed relating to the co‐existence of GM, conventionally and organically produced crops. This has been in the form of a spatially elaborated implementation of the precautionary principle adopted in the Maastricht Treaty from 1992 by the EU.We concretized these rules in relation to actual landscape practices…
Integration of European habitat monitoring based on plant life form composition as an indicator of environmental change and change in biodiversity
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 106(2): 61–74, 2006 During the last 25 years a number of European countries have developed general landscape monitoring systems. In the agricultural landscapes of Denmark the Small Biotope Monitoring Program (SBMP). which focuses on the dynamics of small biotopes and their relation to changes in agricultural technology and structural characteristics, has been developed since 1981. Erom 2007, the …

Economic Reform and the Soviet National Question
Gorbachev's attempt to simultaneously reform the economy, the polity and society has sparked a heated debate within the Soviet Union between Moscow and the republics and between the republics themselves about the country's future economic arrangements. Whereas such issues are contentious enough in territorially homogeneous countries such as the US, if one throws in a volatile mixture of ethnicity and officially sanctioned homelands, the banalitie…
