The Export Efficiency of Vietnam After 40 Years of Doi Moi Reforms
After 40 years of Doi Moi reforms, Vietnam has emerged as a leading exporter in labour‐intensive industries, including manufacturing. However, a crucial question remains whether these reforms, through improvements in infrastructure and institutions, have made Vietnamʼs exports more efficient in realising its potential with its trading partners. This paper conducts an empirical analysis using the stochastic frontier gravity model to examine Vietna…
The impact of outward foreign direct investment on China’s export
This study uses country-level panel data covering 173 countries for the period 2003–2015 and employs the two-tier stochastic frontier gravity model to investigate empirically the impact of China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on its export. The results of this study indicate that China’s OFDI has a positive and statistically significant influence on promoting China’s export. The results for different country groups with different leve…
Has India achieved its potential in merchandise exports
Recently Varghese (2018 Varghese, P. 2018. “An Indian Economic Strategy to 2035: Report to the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.” Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade-Government of Australia. Accessed August 12, 2020. https://www.dfat.gov.au/geo/india/ies/overview.html [Google Scholar]), in his report to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Commonwealth of Australia, remarked that till 2035 India will…
Australia's export potential
A country's inability to export to its potential is a reflection of institutional and infrastructural impediments and rigidities that exist at home as well as in its trading partners. Distinguishing these rigidities as ‘behind the border’ factors and ‘beyond the border’ factors, respectively, this paper examines the impact of ‘behind the border’ factors on Australia's export potential. The hypothesis tested in this paper is that the ‘behind the b…

Impact of Trade Liberalisation on Technical Efficiency of Vietnamese Manufacturing Firms
This study has examined whether trade liberalisation facilitated manufacturing firms in Vietnam to realise their production potentials fully using firm-level balanced panel data over the period 2000ȓ03. The fi ndings support the theoretical implications of the positive and robust impact of trade liberalisation on firm performance. The study reveals that while more trade liberalisation is conducive to better firm performance, increasing the share …
Monetary Transmission in Post-Reform India
In the post-reform period, the monetary policy of India has been undergoing various transformations. The emphasis is shifting from conventional instruments of price and quantity control to a more sophisticated route of monetary transmission. Using the recent econometric methodology of cointegrated vector autoregression with generalized restrictions, this study has attempted to examine whether monetary policy in India does work through interest ra…
Rice Green Revolution in Asia and Its Transferability to Africa
Drawing on the experiences of Asian countries, we attempt to identify the transferability of Asian Green Revolution to sub-Saharan Africa by examining whether there is a common set of factors affecting rice yields in the two regions. We have attempted to propose the strategy to realize a Green Revolution in sub-Saharan Africa based on lessons learned from the comparative studies included in this special volume
Agricultural modernisation, and the distribution of benefits
Using covariance analysis, this cross‐sectional study of samples of farmers from a mature irrigation project in Malaysia showed that, even with favourable access to resources there were significant differences in production technologies between socio‐economic groups within the irrigation project. The new rice technology was neither size group nor tenure neutral. The effective use of the technology improved up to a medium size group of three to fi…
Firm and product‐specific technical efficiencies in a multiproduct cycle system
Measures of technical efficiency were estimated using stochastic translog production frontiers for a sample of farmers operating in a rainfed area in India. These estimates were farm‐specific as opposed to being based on deviation from an average sample efficiency. In contrast to other studies, farm‐specific efficiency estimates were obtained for farmers growing multiple outputs in which the production levels were interrelated and each product wa…
Types of education and agricultural productivity
With a yield function that gave a maximum attainable yield, and the yield performance of the farmers in relation to this, and with multiple classification analysis of the differences between the maximum and actual yields, it was found that the level of formal education of farmers was not a significant factor, but that farmers’ non‐formal education (understanding of the technology), which was independent of formal education, was a significant infl…
Testing the hypothesis of equal relative economic efficiency using restricted Aitken's least squares estimation
This paper tests the hypothesis of equal relative economic efficiency between farmer groups growing high yielding paddy varieties (HYVs) in a Southern Indian district. Using a theoretically acceptable form of analysis, this work applies restricted Aitken's least squares method with Lagrange multipliers for the empirical verification of the hypothesis. This method of estimation provides an easier way of testing the hypothesis and a more useful int…
