Let's Not Forget the Career in College and Career Ready
The recent focus on preparing K–12 students to be college and career ready has increased the attention to college‐level literacies but has almost ignored career and technical courses as part of the landscape of adolescent literacy. This article explores literacies embedded in career and technical education courses, provides examples from agricultural and business education, and offers ideas for professional development that target literacy in car…

Disciplinary Literacy Assessment
This article describes a teacher created formative assessment useful for content area teachers in English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The assessment can be administered in one class period and results can be used to guide planning for disciplinary literacy implementation
Disciplinary Literacy
This article argues that every teacher is not a teacher of literacy, but instead posits that teachers in content areas must adapt literacy strategies to the content being taught and to the context in which that teaching occurs. Examples of adaptations of a literacy strategy for use in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are provided
Talking the Talk
This article explores how research‐based principles of vocabulary instruction, embedded in the learning cycle, may be enacted through a variety of strategies across the four core curricular disciplines. Examples of the strategies are provided, drawn from English, mathematics, social studies, and science
