Input-Output Analysis
This edition of Ronald Miller and Peter Blair's classic textbook is an essential reference for students and scholars in the input-output research and applications community. The book has been fully revised and updated to reflect important developments in the field since its original publication. New topics covered include SAMs (and extended input-output models) and their connection to input-output data, structural decomposition analysis (SDA), mu…

Spatial and Sectoral Aggregation in the Commodity-Industry Multiregional Input-Output Model
In this paper, some experiments on the effect of aggregation in multiregional input-output (MRIO) models are reported. Sectoral aggregation and spatial aggregation are examined, separately and jointly, with use of hypothetical MRIO accounts and also with use of the 1977 US MRIO data. The spatial aggregation experiments constitute an extension and update of similar kinds of research reported on in a previous paper by Blair and Miller, in which hyp…
Stability of Supply Coefficients and Consistency of Supply-Driven and Demand-Driven Input - Output Models
Recent literature dealing with supply-side and demand-side Input - Output models appears to contain some confusion or at least imprecision in the use of 'stability', 'joint stability', and 'consistency'. This comment contains a tentative proposal for terminological conventions with respect to the three concepts. These thoughts are offered against the backdrop of a recent paper by Deman which illustrates the definitional problems
Spatial Aggregation in Multiregional Input-Output Models
This study continues the investigations into effects of spatial aggregation in connected, several-region input-output models that were initially reported upon in Miller and Blair (1980; 1981) for an interregional input-output model. In the present paper our interest is in the error that is introduced into a multiregional input-output model through aggregation of regions. As in the earlier paper, we investigate the question by means of both hypoth…
Experiments in Regionalization of a National Input-Output Table
In this paper the authors present results of a series of experiments in which the input-output structure of the State of Washington (as reflected in 1972 survey-based input-output tables) is approximated from similar data for the nation (as given in the 1967 survey-based US tables). Variants of two kinds of nonsurvey approaches are employed. These are purely-nonsurvey methods (including, for example, adjustments according to simple location quoti…

unique between levels of educational development and years of school completed. The relationship may differ from individual to individual, from country to country, and even from region to region within the United States. That is certainly a weakness of national calculations such as I made. It does not follow, however, that there are no averages of school years which are reasonably good predictors of levels of general educational development. The …

The Impact of the Aluminum Industry on the Pacific Northwest
CONSIDERATION of many of the problems concerning regional development has been conspicuously absent from modern economic writing; only recently have theoretical foundations for empirical analysis been formulated adequately. The purpose of this paper is to apply the new techniques of input-output analysis to a concrete problem of economic change. The entrance of the aluminum industry into the Pacific Northwest I during World War IT provides an exc…
