Leisure Time Invention
This paper studies the contextual factors that influence whether invention occurs during work time or leisure time. Leisure time invention, a potentially important but thus far largely unexplored source of employee creativity, refers to invention where the main underlying idea occurs while the employee is away from the workplace. We build on existing theory in the fields of organizational creativity and knowledge recombination, especially work re…
North American Oil and Natural Gas: Current Trends, Future Problems
THE POTENTIALThe United States imports more oil and oil products from Canada than from any other single source. It imports nearly two million barrels of oil per day, three quarters of which is crude oil, placing Canada marginally behind Saudi Arabia as a US crude supplier. Canada is the leading exporter to the US of both refined oil products and natural gas (Canada is the world's second largest exporter of natural gas, after Russia). All of Canad…

How secure international oil? Organizational instability and change within the oil industry
From an approach utilizing a variation of the economic theories of organization and the contract, this article analyzes the causes of the current instability of international crude markets. Little prospect is seen for future market stability. This lack of stability, it is argued, will ultimately increase future North American and European dependence on low cost crude producers, here primarily those within Opec
International Oil: The Scandinavian Dimension
The recurrent energy crises of the past 17 years and the not unrelated rapid development of North Sea oil and gas reserves have had an impact on all the Scandinavian countries, both those with offshore interests and those without. Yet despite calls for Nordic cooperation in this field, such cooperation is virtually nonexistent. It is argued here that this failure is due to the nature of the international oil and gas regime. The analysis is based …

Blue Gold: The Political Economy of Natural Gas
The Political Economy of European Natural Gas Markets
Davis, J. D. The Political Economy of European Natural Gas Markets. Cooperation and Conflict, XVIII , 1983, 3-20. The natural gas market, like Caesar's Gaul, is in three distinct parts: production, transmission and distribution. Critical to the relations between the stages is stability — a form of functional equilibrium not unlike that of solutions to a three person cooperative game. After defining stability and instability in natural gas markets…
The Arab Use of Oil: October 1973—July 1974
Davis J. The Arab Use of Oil: October 1973-July 1974. Cooperation and Conflict, XI, 1976, 57-67. What happened in the period October 1973-July 1974, with respect to the Arab use of the oil 'weapon'? How did it happen and why? The embargoes, production cuts, and price rises which characterized the period were not the result of a tightly knit 'cartel'. Neither were they the product of sheer happenstance. In fact the events of this period were the l…
