In Search of Liberty: African American Internationalism in the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World
"In Search of Liberty engages ways in which African Americans, since the founding of the United States, have understood their struggle for freedom and liberty as a feature of changes within the Atlantic world. The essays in this volume capture how African Americans grappled with those questions, as the struggle for liberty in the United States continued through the end of the nineteenth century, when new regimes of power implemented systems of ra…
The Impact of Self-Service Bans in the Retail Gasoline Market
In 1968, 23 states barred the self-service sale of gasoline. By 1992, close to 80% of all gasoline sales nationwide were marketed through self-service, and only New Jersey and Oregon continued to ban self-service sales. This paper examines the rise of self-service gasoline and its impact on price and the structure of the retail gasoline sector. Using predicted values for self-service sales for New Jersey and Oregon, the findings indicate that the…
Declining Industries and the Persistence of Government Support Programs: The Quiet Decline of Gum Naval Stores Production in the United States
Understanding industrial decline is important from both historical and policy perspectives. The United States was the world's leading producer of gum naval stores in the early twentieth centuiy, but by the late 1970s production had all but ceased. Evidence presented here indicates that changing relative prices induced forest owners, the key stakeholders, to shift production towards other forest products. Nevertheless, the federal government conti…

Efficient markets and great lakes timber: A conservation issue reexamined
A Note on Inflation and Concentration
The view that the inflationary process experienced in the United States over the last 10 years can be largely attributed to increasing concentration in the private sector has once again regained a degree of prominence. We offer calculations showing the effect of increasing concentration in the consumer price index. The results indicate that the act of reducing concentration, if successful is likely to have little impact on the consumer price inde…
Property Rights, Nineteenth-Century Federal Timber Policy, and the Conservation Movement
In campaigning for the establishment of the National Forests in the late nineteenth century, conservationists pointed to fraud and timber theft in the Pacific Northwest. In this paper we argue that the conservationists were misdirected; that it was a costly Federal land policy that encouraged fraud and theft. In the face of restrictive land laws, fraud was necessary if lumber companies were to acquire large tracts of land to take advantage of eco…
