The article attempts to show that the modern notion of ‘religion’ is a construction that emerged in the context of inter-religious encounters following the fall of Constantinople and especially in the years around the Reformation. By an analysis of the Danish Humanist Society and the Danish Atheist Society, the aim of this contribution is to consider one aspect of the borderland of the Danish model of religion. On the basis of a relational approach to the study of religion, I conclude that the Humanist Society from an analytical point of view is a religion while the Atheist Society is not. Danish State policy on the teaching of religion from 1900 to 2007
The author presents an analysis of the political decision making process regarding the teaching of religion in Denmark from 1900 until 2007. The author uses Norbert Elias’s concept of the survival unit as the analytical framework of the study. Towards a New Approach to Secularization
The author attempts to develop a new approach to the process of secularization. It is argued that the existing theories of secularization have failed to pay sufficient attention to the state. Here, the state is regarded as an actor with interests among which the maintenance of sovereignty vis-à-vis other states is vital. The author has analysed Danish state policies with regard to the teaching of religion in elementary schools from 1700 onwards. …
Holocene climatic records from Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, NWT, Canada
Four ice cores from the top of the Agassiz Ice Cap and down a flow line have been variously analysed for 8 ( 18 O), ECM (solid conductivity) and ice-melt layer stratigraphy. Stratigraphic correlation of volcanic horizons is used to date the last 8000 years of the cores. The timescales at the Wisconsin/ Holocene transition are pinned at the new GRIP ice-core date. Both 8 and summer-melt records from cores A84 and A87 imply summer temperatures have…
