  • The travellee-translator and cultural memory

    Open Access•Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2023

Taking as its focus three different German editions of Thomas Nugent's Travels through Germany (1768), this article investigates how translation and re-translation enable travelogues to be circulated internationally at specific historical moments and thus intervene in debates around national images, (self-)representations and stereotypes. More specifically, it examines how the act of (re)translation can also be understood as a form of travellee r…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Laura Tarkka, Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2023

First coined by Mary Louise Pratt in 1992, the concept of the “travellee” has received a growing amount of interest in research on travel writing. Exploring the methodological possibilities opened up by the perspective of the travellee, the six articles in this special issue aim both to sharpen the edges of this concept and to test it as a key which may open doors into new disciplinary directions, including geography, political history, anthropol…

  • Translation, Annotation and Knowledge-Making

    Open Access•Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•Comparative Critical Studies•2019•References: 2

This paper sheds new light on the relationship between translation and annotation by adding the theoretical coordinate of expertise to the discussion about the ways in which translators contribute to the making of knowledge. It takes as its case study the German geologist Leopold von Buch's account of his scientific travels through Scandinavia, the Reise durch Norwegen und Lappland (Berlin: Nauck, 1810), which appeared in English three years late…

Vita Sackville-West is now best known as Virginia Woolf's muse, as a horticultural journalist, and as the creator of Sissinghurst's gardens. Yet during her lifetime, her works were translated energetically into German and she was cast in some German literary journals as a leading figure on the European interwar and post-war literary scene. This essay analyses how Sackville-West's short story, Seducers in Ecuador (Hogarth Press, 1924), made its 19…

  • Celtic censure

    Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2014

Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's notion of regionalist discourse as the performative legitimation of specific frontiers, this article examines how the English traveller Samuel Jackson Pratt mediated a picture of the Welsh to late eighteenth-century readers in his Gleanings Through Wales, Holland and Westphalia (1795). This process of mediation was further complicated by the translation of this work into German as the Aehrenlese auf einer Reise durch …

  • These changes and accessions of knowledge’

    Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2011

A second English translation of Alexander von Humboldt's account of travel to South America, the Relation historique (1814–25), was published between 1852 and 1853. Appearing some 30 years after the first seven-volume translation (1814–29) by Helen Maria Williams, this second rendering of the Personal Narrative by Thomasina Ross was an abridged version that aimed to make Humboldt's travelogue more relevant to the mid-century reader. This translat…

  • Revolutions in Botany

    Open Access•Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Literature and…•2011

In 1801 a new botanical work appeared on French booksellers’ shelves. Entitled the Flore des jeunes personnes (Flora for Young People ), it swelled the ranks of both popular and more academic texts on the science of botany that were appearing in ever swifter succession on the francophone book markets towards the end of the eighteenth century. 1 But the Flore des jeunes personnes was no home-grown product. Rather, it was a translation by Octave Se…

  • Travel, Sensibility and Gender

    Open Access•Alison E Martin•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2004•References: 1

This article queries the traditionally held view that Sophie von La Roche's travel account of England, the Tagebuch einer Reise durch Holland und England (1788), was a purely sentimental, work. It offers a detailed examination of the rhetorical strategies used by La Roche to represent England to a German‐speaking readership and asks how these negotiated their way around notions of female inquiry and sentimentalised ‘female’ modes of writing. It e…
