  • Sibelian Formal Principles in the First Movement of Malcolm Arnold’s Fifth Symphony

    Open Access•Ryan Ross•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Musical…•2023•References: 6

Malcolm Arnold’s symphonies have persistently divided critical opinion because of their problematic relationship with traditional genre expectations. This is especially the case in works that eschew sonata-style tonal conflicts and formal markers in favour of theme- and timbre-driven processes. In these respects, Sibelius, rather than members of the Austro-German symphonic tradition, was an important model for Arnold’s individual approach to symp…

  • British Symphonic Criticism

Ryan Ro, Ryan Ross•ARTICLE•Fontes artis musicae•2022

In 1949 and 1966-1967, within less than two decades, Penguin Books published separate symposia treating the same subject: the symphony genre in the hands of major practitioners since Haydn. The first, a single volume edited by Ralph Hill, contains essays displaying multiple symphonic philosophies that are represented in the wider British critical literature to date. The second, edited by Robert Simpson, spans two volumes, and includes treatments …

Analyses resulted in three profiles labeled low alcohol use-low sociosexuality, high alcohol use-medium sociosexuality, and high alcohol use-high sociosexuality. Baseline victimization predicted latent profile membership. More severely victimized women were more likely to be …

  • Between Shell Shock and PTSD? ‘Accident Neurosis’ and Its Sequelae in Post-War Britain

    Open Access•Ryan Ross•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2017•Cited by: 2

This article focuses on the concept of 'accident neurosis', popularised by neurologist Henry Miller in studies published in 1961. It aims to realise two goals. First, it introduces Miller's concept of accident neurosis to the broader history of trauma-to a field, that is, more preoccupied with military traumata and clear-cut psychiatric aetiologies. Secondly, I use Miller's studies, and the considerable legacy they created, to reflect on how hist…
