Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates
A Cost Comparison of Leachate Treatment Alternatives
This paper is a cost comparison of three treatment alternatives for treating leachate from the Glanbrook landfill site in the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth (RMHW), namely, a conventional pumping-and-hauling scheme, a forcemain installation, and a constructed wetland. The site opened in 1980 is currently the only active landfill site in the region. The landfill is designed for a capacity of approximately 11,800,000 m of domestic, com…
Summary of Panel Discussion
This chapter provides an opportunity for the exchange of ideas openly and candidly for the participants with differing experiences and backgrounds. There was general agreement on the success of using constructed wetlands (CWs) to treat different types of wastewaters. The use of CWs for treating landfill leachates was considered a logical extension of the evolving use of this ecotechnology. Landfill leachates have entrained constituents necessitat…

Constructed wetlands for the treatment of landfill leachates
Constructed wetlands are proving to be the best natural treatment system for landfill leachates. Documentation of the experience in this use of constructed wetlands has been limited. To fill the gap, Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates is the first compilation of the results of research from North America and Europe. Originally presented at an international symposium, this collection of papers offers the most recent findi…
