  • The First Archaeomagnetic Age at Tiwanaku and Implications for Dating Andean Metallurgical Furnaces

    Open Access•Judit del Río, P Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 42

This paper presents the first archaeomagnetic dating at Tiwanaku (Andean Altiplano). We compared the geomagnetic field values recorded by a metallurgical furnace against an updated SHAWQ2k‐SH global model and a regional intensity curve, both of which include, for the first time, high‐quality intensity data from the Southern Hemisphere. Results place the furnace's last use in 450–740 ce , and the decorated ceramic chronology at the site further co…

We report a tephra deposit in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin, Bolivia, which was deposited by a major, previously unrecognized eruption sometime between AD 400 and 720. Archaeological data suggest these centuries were characterized by a substantial community migration to Tiwanaku, where social interaction networks gave birth to one of the Andes’ first large complex societies. Here we provide an initial characterization of this tephra, based on …

Focusing on silt reservoirs in the upper Ica drainage, Peru, the authors use cores and radiocarbon dates to demonstrate the pre-Hispanic construction of walls to enhance and expan…

  • Radiocarbon vs. Luminescence Dating of Archaeological Ceramics in the Southern Andes: A Review of Paired Dates, Bayesian Models, and a Pilot Study

Open Access•E J Marsh, Antti Korpisaari et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021

Archaeologists have been using luminescence to date pottery in South America since the late 1970s, inspired by early success in northern Chile. However, luminescence dates have not been rigorously compared to independent dating methods, which this paper’s goal. First, we present a compilation of 94 paired 14 C and luminescence dates from the southern Andes, which reveals discrepancies across a range of contexts and ages. Second, we compare two Ba…

  • IntCal, SHCal, or a Mixed Curve? Choosing a 14 C Calibration Curve for Archaeological and Paleoenvironmental Records from Tropical South America

    Open Access•E J Marsh, M C Bruno et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Cited by: 35•References: 79

Because the 14 C calibration curves IntCal and SHCal are based on data from temperate latitudes, it remains unclear which curve is more suitable for archaeological and paleoenvironmental records from tropical South America. A review of climate dynamics reveals a significant influx of Northern Hemisphere air masses and moisture over a substantial part of the continent during the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM). Areas affected by the SASM rece…

  • Dating the Expansion of the Inca Empire: Bayesian Models from Ecuador and Argentina

    Open Access•E J Marsh, Ray Kidd et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 30•References: 37

The chronology of the Inca Empire has traditionally relied on ethnohistoric dates, which suggest that a northern expansion into modern Ecuador began in AD 1463 and a southern expansion into modern Argentina began in AD 1471. We test the validity of these dates with two Bayesian models, which show that the ethnohistoric dates are incorrect and that the southern expansion began before the northern one. The first model of seven dates shows that the …

  • Temporal Inflection Points in Decorated Pottery: A Bayesian Refinement of the Late Formative Chronology in the Southern Lake Titicaca Basin, Bolivia

    Open Access•E J Marsh, Andrew P Roddick et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2019•Cited by: 16•References: 38

The Late Formative period immediately precedes the emergence of Tiwanaku, one of the earliest South American states, yet it is one of the most poorly understood periods in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin (Bolivia). In this article, we refine the ceramic chronology of this period with large sets of dates from eight sites, focusing on temporal inflection points in decorated ceramic styles. These points, estimated here by Bayesian models, index spe…

  • Scale of human mobility in the southern Andes (Argentina and Chile): A new framework based on strontium isotopes

Despite the large socio-economic changes recorded, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values indicate a persisting scenario of low systematic mobility between the different geological regions. Our results suggest that strontium isotope values provide the most germane means to track patterns of human occupation of distinct regions in complex geological landscapes, offering a much higher spatial resolution than oxygen isotopes in the southern Andes

  • The emergence of agropastoralism: Accelerated ecocultural change on the Andean altiplano, ∼3540–3120 cal BP

    E J Marsh•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 28

In the fourth millennium BP, there were major environmental and cultural changes on the Andean altiplano of South America, but the chronology remains vague. A recent synthesis describes a slow, gradual transition from hunting and gathering to agropastoralism. This proposal is tested by refining the date of the onset of more humid and stable conditions, around 3550 cal BP, based on a Bayesian model of 26 dates from Lake Wiñaymarka and an updated c…

Khonkho Wankane is a ceremonial center located in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin, Bolivia. During the Late Formative period (AD 1-500), its residents practiced agropastoral lifeways and participated in the rise of the state at Tiwanaku. Like at many Andean sites, bones from the family Camelidae are the most abundant large mammal in domestic contexts. Identifying camelid morphotypes represented by these bones carries far-reaching implications fo…

We update date calibrations with local ΔR corrections and mixtures of recent calibration curves and include five previously unpublished dates. We use histograms of calibrated medians, sorted…

  • Arthur Posnansky, the Czar of Tiwanaku Archaeology

    Open Access•E J Marsh•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the History of…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Arthur Posnansky was the illustrious pioneer of Tiwanaku archaeology, remembered as a quixotic, flamboyant, and swashbuckling character. He was a naval officer, a businessman, and a scholar. He dedicated nearly fifty years of his life to the study of the Andean past, which resonates through the history of Bolivian archaeology. While clearly not the field’s father, his commanding presence and outsized legacy could make him the czar of Tiwanaku arc…

Humans have engineered their environments throughout the Holocene, especially in the construction of hydraulic infrastructure. In many regions, however, this infrastructure is difficult to date, including the vestiges of water-management systems in the Andean highlands. Focusing on silt reservoirs in the upper Ica drainage, Peru, the authors use cores and radiocarbon dates to demonstrate the pre-Hispanic construction of walls to enhance and expan…
