  • Individual-level trajectories of religiosity during adolescence and their implications for purpose

    Open Access•Gabrielle N Pfund, Leah H Schultz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Religion and…•2022

grade, and a measure of sense of purpose at age 21 as part of the Oregon Youth Substance Use Project. Findings from latent growth models suggest both a mean-level decline in religiosity as well as individual differences in patterns of change across time. Furthermore, the intercept and change in religiosity throughout adolescence positively predicted sense of purpose at age 21. Results are discussed with respect to how individual differences occur…

  • Parent-Child Conflict during Elementary School as a Longitudinal Predictor of Sense of Purpose in Emerging Adulthood

  • Association Between Initial Use of e-Cigarettes and Subsequent Cigarette Smoking Among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Open Access•Samir Soneji, Jessica L Barrington-Trimis et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Pediatrics•2017

Importance: The public health implications of e-cigarettes depend, in part, on whether e-cigarette use affects the risk of cigarette smoking. Objective: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies that assessed initial use of e-cigarettes and subsequent cigarette smoking. Data Sources: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, the 2016 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco 22nd Annual Meeting abstracts,…

  • Purpose in life in emerging adulthood: Development and validation of a new brief measure

Patrick L Hill, Grant W Edmonds et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Positive Psychology•2016

Accruing evidence points to the value of studying purpose in life across adolescence and emerging adulthood. Research though is needed to understand the unique role of purpose in life in predicting well-being and developmentally relevant outcomes during emerging adulthood. The current studies (total n = 669) found support for the development of a new brief measure of purpose in life using data from American and Canadian samples, while demonstrati…

  • The relation of change in hostility and sociability during childhood to substance use in mid adolescence

  • Tobacco Cessation via Public Dental Clinics: Results of a Randomized Trial

Judith S Gordon, Judy A Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Objectives. We sought to compare the effectiveness of a dental practitioner advice and brief counseling intervention to quit tobacco use versus usual care for patients in community health centers on tobacco cessation, reduction in tobacco use, number of quit attempts, and change in readiness to quit. Methods. We randomized 14 federally funded community health center dental clinics that serve diverse racial/ethnic groups in 3 states (Mississippi, …

  • Do trajectories of household risk in childhood moderate pubertal timing effects on substance initiation in middle school

    Sarah D Lynne-Landsman, Sarah D Lynne‐Landsman et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Previous research on pubertal timing has either evaluated contextual predictors of early puberty or negative adjustment outcomes associated with off-time development, especially early maturation. In this study, we integrated these 2 lines of research by evaluating the moderating influence of early childhood household risk on associations between early puberty and 8th-grade substance use in a longitudinal sample of 1,070 participants. We determine…

  • The 5A’s vs 3A’s plus proactive quitline referral in private practice dental offices: Preliminary results: Table 1

    Judith S Gordon, Judy A Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2007

These results suggest that there are both advantages and disadvantages to the use of quitlines as an adjunct to brief counselling provided by dental practitioners. Patients receiving quitline counselling quit at higher rates than those who did not; however, only a small percentage of patients received counselling from the quitline. Therefore, it appears that dental professionals may be most effective in helping their patients to quit by regularly…

  • Psychometric Properties of Scales for the Measurement of Psychosocial Variables Associated with Depression in Adolescence 1

    Open Access•Judy A Andrews, Peter M Lewinsohn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

In preparation for a community-based study of depression in adolescence, several pilot studies were conducted with samples of adolescents. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the reliability and association with depression of several instruments when used with older (14- to 18-year-old) adolescents. These instruments included measures of cognitions, body image, self-esteem, self-awareness, social interactions with peers and family, socia…

    Judy A Andrews, Peter M Lewinsohn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

In preparation for a community-based study of depression in adolescence, several point studies were conducted with samples of adolescents. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the reliability and association with depression of several instruments when used with older (14- to 18-year-old) adolescents. These instruments included measures of cognitions, body image, self-esteem, self-awareness, social interactions with peers and family, socia…

  • Parental Influence on Early Adolescent Substance Use: Specific and Nonspecific Effects

Open Access•Judy A Andrews, Hyman Hops et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1993•Cited by: 14•References: 4

This study examined both the substance-specific and nonspecific, or generalized, effects of parent substance use, attitudes toward use, and behavior regarding use on adolescent initiation and maintenance of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana use. Data from 645 target adolescents and their parent(s) regarding their own use and parents' attitude, cautionary statements, and negative consequences were used to predict both the onset of using each subs…

  • Assessment of depression in adolescents using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.

    Robert E Roberts, Judy A Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•1990

Operating characteristics of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were examined by using data from 4 samples of students in Grades 9-12. Although it appears that the CES-D scale may be appropriate for use with adolescents, the issues of stability of scores over time, appropriate cutoff scores, and usefulness in detecting cases of clinical depression remain unresolved

  • Parent-adolescent congruence for adolescent substance use

  • Attributions for Undesirable Life Events, Type a Behavior and Depression

    Open Access•Gerdi Weidner, Judy A Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1983

This investigation examined attributions for life events and Type A behavior of 22 undergraduate women. It was expected that Type A students would make attributions associated with learned helplessness for undesirable life events. As hypothesized, Type A students engaged in more self-blame for important undesirable life events and also rated their desirable life events as less important than Type B students. Differences in attributional strategie…

  • Sex differences in children's reward allocation under competitive and cooperative instructional sets

    Mark A Barnett, Judy A Andrews•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1977•Cited by: 6

Investigators have become increasingly concerned with the developing child's notions of distributive justice, deservedness, and fairness (Lerner, Miller, & Holmes, 1976). One paradigm designed to assess these variables involves an allocation procedure in which children are instructed to distribute rewards between themselves and a fictitious co-worker or between two fictitious co-workers who are presented as differing in their relative productivit…
