Using early care and education quality measures with dual language learners
Mother–Infant Interactions in Early Head Start
SYNOPSIS Objective . This article identifies patterns of mothering in low-income families from three ethnic groups and explores whether those patterns yield similar associations with child outcomes. Design . A person-centered within-group approach was used to examine observed patterns of mothering among European American (n = 740), African American (n = 604), and Mexican American (n = 322) low-income mothers and their 1-year-olds who were partici…
Mother–Child Interactions in Early Head Start
SYNOPSIS Objective . This article describes the videotaped mother–child interaction procedures and coding used in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project, a sample of low-income families, half of whom received the Early Head Start services (treatment group) and half of whom did not (control group), based on within-site random assignment (17 sites). A total of 1,838 dyads were observed and videotaped in the home (39% European American…
Classroom dimensions predict early peer interaction when children are diverse in ethnicity, race, and home language

By what measure? family time devoted to children in the united states
We argue that previous research on time devoted to child care has paid insufficient attention to the conceptualization of care time. Three separate problems are evident. First, the conventional focus on explicit activities with children distracts attention from the larger responsibilities of “passive” care, which ranges from time when children are sleeping to time when they are in the same general area but are not engaged in an activity with pare…
The Effectiveness of Early Head Start for 3-Year-Old Children and Their Parents
Early Head Start, a federal program begun in 1995 for low-income pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers, was evaluated through a randomized trial of 3,001 families in 17 programs. Interviews with primary caregivers, child assessments, and observations of parent-child interactions were completed when children were 3 years old. Caregivers were diverse in race-ethnicity, language, and other characteristics. Regression-adjusted impact …

The Infant-Toddler Home in the 2nd and 3rd Years of Life
Objective. This article describes the use of the Infant-Toddler Home Observation for Measuring the Environment measure (IT-HOME; Caldwell & Bradley, 1984) in large-scale studies with children in the 2nd and 3rd year of life and explores the psychometric properties of several conceptually based subscales created from HOME items. Design. Data from 4 large studies are examined: the 14-month and 24-month waves of the Early Head Start Research and Eva…
