  • Making connections

    Open Access•Chris S Hulleman, Jeff J Kosovich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2017

We replicated and extended prior research investigating a theoretically guided intervention based on expectancy-value theory designed to enhance student learning outcomes (e.g., Hulleman & Harackiewicz, 2009). First, we replicated prior work by demonstrating that the utility value intervention, which manipulated whether students made connections between the course material and their lives, increased both interest and performance of low-performing…

  • Neither Simple Allusions Nor True Mirrorings

    D Daniel, David B Daniel•ARTICLE•Telos•2010

The title of Carl Schmitt's Hamlet or Hecuba: The Intrusion of the Time into the Play enacts a complex collision between politics and aesthetics.1 The titular colon divides two oppositions from each other, thus producing a couple of couples. If the “either/or” of Hamlet or Hecuba mandates an absolute decision between opposed terms, a frame familiar to us from this theorist of the sovereign decision and the friend/enemy distinction, the logic of t…

  • Gender-Role Conflict and Self-Esteem

    Jonathan P Schwartz, Michael Waldo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2005•References: 13

This study investigated the relationship between gender-role conflict, self-esteem, and domestic violence. Seventy-four men entering a domestic violence treatment program completed self-report measures of gender-role conflict, self-esteem, and abusive and controlling behavior. Regression analysis revealed that high gender-role conflict with respect to success, power, and competition was positively related to physical abuse. Restrictive emotionali…

  • Theories of Conditional Reasoning

    Paul A Klaczynski, Mary J Schuneman et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Children and adolescents were presented with problems that contained deontic (i.e., if action p is taken, then precondition q must be met) or causal (i.e., if event p occurs, then event q will transpire) conditionals and that varied in the ease with which alternative antecedents could be activated. Results showed that inferences were linked to the availability of alternative antecedents and the generation of "disabling" conditions (claims that th…
