  • Interplay of semantic and phonological predictions in language comprehension: Insights from the visual world paradigm

    Open Access•Armando Q Angulo-Chavira, Alejandra Mitzi Castellón-Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

Prediction in language processing is a fundamental cognitive function that supports efficient comprehension and interaction by anticipating upcoming linguistic input from multiple cues, including semantic (meaning-based) and phonological (sound-based) information. This study examined the interaction between semantic and phonological pre-activation during predictive language processing using the visual world paradigm. Across seven experiments with…

  • Hyper-speed meaning and form predictions: An EEG-based representational similarity analysis

    Open Access•Armando Q Angulo-Chavira, Alejandra Mitzi Castellón-Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2025

Language comprehension involves predictive processing, in which comprehenders anticipate both semantic and form-related attributes of upcoming words. This predictive mechanism is crucial as it enables efficient real-time language processing, allowing listeners and readers to keep pace with rapid information streams and quickly correct potential errors. Using electroencephalography (EEG) and representational similarity analysis (RSA), we investiga…

  • Hierarchical prediction in toddlers: Semantic and phonological development

    Open Access•Armando Q Angulo-Chavira, Alejandra Mitzi Castellón-Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2025

Toddlers predict words in constrained sentences from 18 months of age. • Semantic competitor prediction emerges by 24 months. • Phonological competitor prediction emerges by 30 months. • Prediction follows a semantic-to-phonological developmental trajectory. • Results support hierarchical models of language prediction in toddlers. The predictive processing framework suggests that the brain generates semantic and phonological predictions to facili…

  • Developmental trajectories of predictive mechanisms in language comprehension

    Armando Q Angulo-Chavira, Alejandra Mitzi Castellón-Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2025

In this investigation, we delved into the developmental progression of two predictive mechanisms in language comprehension: the associative (Mechanism 1) and the context- and intention-dependent (Mechanism 2). Across three experiments, we assessed the ability to predict semantic content based on syntactic cues among toddlers and adults. Participants were exposed to correction (e.g., "In the yard, I saw a dog, no, a rabbit") and coordination (e.g.…

  • Prime saliency in semantic priming with 18-month-olds

    Open Access•Nicola Gillen, Armando Q Angulo-Chavira et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2024

This study investigated semantic priming in 18-month-old infants using the inter-modal priming technique, focusing on the effects of prime repetition on saliency. Our findings showed that prime repetition led to longer looking times at target referents for related primes compared to unrelated primes, supporting the existence of a structured semantic system in infants as young as 18 months. The results are consistent with both Spreading Activation…

  • The role of imageability in noun and verb acquisition in children with Down syndrome and their peers with typical development

Open Access•MIGUEL GALEOTE, Natalia Arias-Trejo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2024

Our main objective was to analyze the role of imageability in relation to the age of acquisition (AoA) of nouns and verbs in Spanish-speaking children with Down syndrome (DS) and their peers with typical development (TD). The AoA of nouns and verbs was determined using the MacArthur-Bates CDIs adapted to the profile of children with DS. The AoA was analyzed using a linear mixed-effect model, including factors of imageability, group, and word clas…

  • Bottom-up processes dominate early word recognition in toddlers

    Open Access•Janette Chow, Armando Q Angulo-Chavira et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2022

  • Developmental changes in phonological and semantic priming effects in Spanish-speaking toddlers

    Natalia Arias-Trejo, Armando Q Angulo-Chavira et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2022

Research on the early lexical-semantic system has described how toddlers organize word representations based on semantic and phonological features. This study is a longitudinal investigation of the development of this organization during infancy. Middle-high socioeconomic status Mexican toddlers (n = 28, 15 female) were presented with a preferential looking task using an eye-tracker at 18, 21, and 24 months of age, manipulating semantic and phono…
