  • Recall Memory for Topographic Maps and Natural Terrain

Daniel R Montello, CATHERINE N SULLIVAN et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•1994

Two experiments were conducted to examine the recall of information from natural landscapes and topographic maps. In Experiment 1, the nature of information recalled from photos of landscape scenes by experienced and novice topographic-map readers was influenced by the performance of a map-matching task, but did not vary much as a function of experience with topographic maps. In Experiment 2, the nature of information recalled from topographic ma…

  • Locating objects and communicating about locations

    Jodie M Plumert, Herbert L Pick et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1994•Cited by: 5

Two studies examined spatial organization reflected in searches for objects and descriptions of locations. Six-year-olds and adults retrieved objects hidden on the floors of a house or directed another person about how to retrieve them. Of particular interest was whether children's searches and directions reflected clustering of locations by floors. Six-year-olds' searches were more organized than their directions, but a follow-up study demonstra…

  • Eleanor J. Gibson

    Herbert L Pick•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 3

i Eleanor Gibson essentially defined the domain of perceptual learning, which includes both improvement in perception as a function of experience and learning and acquisition of knowledge as a function of changes in perception. In her view, differentiation, as opposed to association, is the process underlying perceptual development as well as perceptual learning. She considered perceptual development to be an important aspect of cognitive developm…

  • Evaluation of a School Lunch Program

    Open Access•Linda P Acredolo, Herbert L Pick•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

In order to evaluate the relative merits of two commercial hot lunch programs, data were collected using a rating of consumption, a parental questionnaire, and a child's questionnaire. The data from the two schools participating in the programs were compared in the context of similar comparisons between two control schools which were matched with the experimental schools on the basis of size and socioeconomic level. Consumption ratings and data f…

  • Perception in Soviet psychology

    Herbert L Pick•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1964

The relation between experimental work in perception in the Soviet Union and the orthodox philosophy of the Soviet state is discussed. It is pointed out that both the philosophy derived from Lenin and Marx and the needs of the state exert an influence on the nature of the problems studied and the type of theory developed. Studies in the areas of tactual, auditory, and visual perception are reviewed. These are considered against the background of …
