  • Beta-Binomial Model for Count Data

Open Access•Xin Qiao, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2025

In this article, the beta-binomial model for count data is proposed and demonstrated in terms of its application in the context of oral reading fluency (ORF) assessment, where the number of words read correctly (WRC) is of interest. Existing studies adopted the binomial model for count data in similar assessment scenarios. The beta-binomial model, however, takes into account extra variability in count data that have been neglected by the binomial…

  • Unique and interactive roles of economic stress and discrimination on heterogeneous development among Chinese American adolescents

    Open Access•Ka I Ip, Jiaxiu Song et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2025

Chinese American youth as a group are often labeled as "model minorities." Yet, this label ignores the vast heterogeneity within Chinese Americans and implies that they are immune to environmental stressors. Using an 8-year longitudinal study of 444 (54% female; initial M age = 13-year-old) Chinese American adolescents, we identified two (well- vs. poorly adjusted) concurrent and three (stably well-adjusted, improved, and risk) latent transition …

  • Improving automated scoring of prosody in oral reading fluency using deep learning algorithm

Open Access•Kuo Wang, Xin Qiao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

Automated assessing prosody of oral reading fluency presents challenges due to the inherent difficulty of quantifying prosody. This study proposed and evaluated an approach focusing on specific prosodic features using a deep-learning neural network. The current work focuses on cross-domain performance, researching how generalizable the prosody scoring is across students and text passages. The results demonstrated that the model with selected pros…

  • Examining the effects of prekindergarten to second grade classroom quality on early elementary achievement

Open Access•Yusuf Kara, Dylan E Farmer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

Previous research has investigated the influence of preschool interventions in early elementary environments with some results suggesting that high quality early preschool experiences may have meaningful effects on student academic outcomes not only immediately following the preschool years but also in the long term. This study aimed to investigate this topic further by using a novel cross-classified model to account for the complex hierarchical …

  • Equating Oral Reading Fluency Scores

Open Access•Yusuf Kara, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2024

Words read correctly per minute (WCPM) is the reporting score metric in oral reading fluency (ORF) assessments, which is popularly utilized as part of curriculum-based measurements to screen at-risk readers and to monitor progress of students who receive interventions. Just like other types of assessments with multiple forms, equating would be necessary when WCPM scores are obtained from multiple ORF passages to be compared both between and withi…

  • Bias for Treatment Effect by Measurement Error in Pretest in Ancova Analysis

Open Access•Yoichi Miyazaki, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2022

This paper investigated consequences of measurement error in the pretest on the estimate of the treatment effect in a pretest–posttest design with the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model, focusing on both the direction and magnitude of its bias. Some prior studies have examined the magnitude of the bias due to measurement error and suggested ways to correct it. However, none of them clarified how the direction of bias is affected by measurement…

  • Development and promise of a vocabulary intelligent tutoring system for Second-Grade Latinx English learners

Doris L Baker, Hao Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Technology…•2021

We examine the promise, usability, and feasibility of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) to improve the vocabulary and language proficiency in science and social studies of Latinx second grade English learners (ELs). Participants were 217 ELs attending English only programs or bilingual programs. Findings from the clustered randomized control trial using a researcher-developed proximal assessment indicated that students who used the ITS signifi…

  • Hierarchical Bayes Approach to Estimate the Treatment Effect for Randomized Controlled Trials

Open Access•Xinya Liang, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2020

One important issue in Bayesian estimation is the determination of an effective informative prior. In hierarchical Bayes models, the uncertainty of hyperparameters in a prior can be further modeled via their own priors, namely, hyper priors. This study introduces a framework to construct hyper priors for both the mean and the variance hyperparameters for estimating the treatment effect in a two-group randomized controlled trial. Assuming a random…

  • Estimating Model-Based Oral Reading Fluency

Open Access•Yusuf Kara, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2020

Oral reading fluency (ORF), used by teachers and school districts across the country to screen and progress monitor at-risk readers, has been documented as a good indicator of reading comprehension and overall reading competence. In traditional ORF administration, students are given one minute to read a grade-level passage, after which the assessor calculates the words correct per minute (WCPM) fluency score by subtracting the number of incorrect…

  • Using propensity score matching to estimate treatment effects of afterschool programs on third‐grade reading outcomes

    Open Access•Scott Baker, Scott K Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Evidence on whether afterschool programs enhance academic achievement is limited and mixed. In this study, a group of community providers delivered interventions to students to improve academic achievement. We used propensity score matching to estimate the impact of these afterschool interventions on third‐grade reading achievement. A significant effect of moderate magnitude was found favoring students who participated in afterschool programming.…

  • Evaluation of Model Selection Strategies for Cross-Level Two-Way Differential Item Functioning Analysis

Open Access•Chalie Patarapichayatham, Akihito Kamata et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2012

Model specification issues on the cross-level two-way differential item functioning model were previously investigated by Patarapichayatham et al. (2009) . Their study clarified that an incorrect model specification can easily lead to biased estimates of key parameters. The objective of this article is to provide further insights on the issue by specifically focusing on the impact of model selection strategies. Six model selection strategies were…

  • Differential item functioning due to gender between depression and anxiety items among Chilean adolescents

Open Access•Cristina B Bares, Cristina Bares et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2012

BACKGROUND: Although much is known about the higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders among adolescent females, less is known about the differential item endorsement due to gender in items of scales commonly used to measure anxiety and depression. AIMS: We conducted a study to examine if adolescent males and females from Chile differed on how they endorsed the items of the Youth Self Report (YSR) anxious/depressed problem scale. We u…

  • A Note on the Relation Between Factor Analytic and Item Response Theory Models

Akihito Kamata, Daniel J Bauer•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2008

The relations among several alternative parameterizations of the binary factor analysis model and the 2-parameter item response theory model are discussed. It is pointed out that different parameterizations of factor analysis model parameters can be transformed into item response model theory parameters, and general formulas are provided. Illustrative data analysis is provided to demonstrate the transformations.
