Spatial but not temporal numerosity thresholds correlate with formal math skills in children
Humans and other animals are able to make rough estimations of quantities using what has been termed the approximate number system (ANS). Much evidence suggests that sensitivity to numerosity correlates with symbolic math capacity, leading to the suggestion that the ANS may serve as a start-up tool to develop symbolic math. Many experiments have demonstrated that numerosity perception transcends the sensory modality of stimuli and their presentat…
Numerosity but not texture-density discrimination correlates with math ability in children
Considerable recent work suggests that mathematical abilities in children correlate with the ability to estimate numerosity. Does math correlate only with numerosity estimation, or also with other similar tasks? We measured discrimination thresholds of school-age (6- to 12.5-years-old) children in 3 tasks: numerosity of patterns of relatively sparse, segregatable items (24 dots); numerosity of very dense textured patterns (250 dots); and discrimi…
Early visual deprivation severely compromises the auditory sense of space in congenitally blind children
A recent study has shown that congenitally blind adults, who have never had visual experience, are impaired on an auditory spatial bisection task (Gori, Sandini, Martinoli, & Burr, 2014). In this study we investigated how thresholds for auditory spatial bisection and auditory discrimination develop with age in sighted and congenitally blind children (9 to 14 years old). Children performed 2 spatial tasks (minimum audible angle and space bisection…

Olivi, Apocalyptic Expectation, and Visionary Experience
If Peter John Olivi was given less than his due by previous generations of scholars, the present generation seems bent on making it up to him. Recent writers have identified him as a father of fourteenth-century nominalism, as a major architect of the dogma of papal infallibility, as a trail-blazer in economic thought, and as an astute reformer whose advice, if heeded, would have saved the church a good deal of subsequent trouble. In the process,…

Further Evidence Concerning Speech in Neandertal Man
Seventeen measurements associated with the cranial base were compared for three groups: modem H. sapiens; Mesolithic H. sapiens; and two Neandertals, Skhiil V and the Rhodesian specimen. It was found that cranial base morphology was not substantially different in the Neandertals from modem and Mesolithic groups. The fact that cranial base morphology differs in any of the groups only negligibly precludes any reconstruction of Neandertal soft anato…
