Does any mother’s body odor stimulate interest in mother’s face in 4‐month‐old infants
Little is known about the effects of olfaction on visual processing during infancy. We investigated whether and how an infant's own mother's body odor or another mother's body odor affects 4‐month‐old infants’ looking at their mother's face when it is paired with a stranger's face. In Experiment 1, infants were exposed to their mother's body odor or to a control odor, while in Experiment 2, infants were exposed to a stranger mother's body odor wh…
Olfactory Familiarization and Discrimination in Preterm and Full‐Term Newborns
The purpose of this study was to observe olfactory detection and discrimination in preterm and full‐term newborns. Infants were familiarized for 10 trials with either vanillin or anethole. On each trial, a cotton swab perfumed with one of the odors was slowly moved in front of the baby's nose for 10 sec. For half of the preterm and full‐term infants, a new odor was presented after the last familiarization trial (experimental groups). For the othe…

Object and event representation in 61⁄2-month-old infants
Two experiments were conducted in which infants had to use remembered knowledge of auditory-visual events to guide their reaching and grasping. The events involved a ball falling noisily through a tube and coming to rest at 1 of 2 locations, with either resting site specified by distinctive auditory information. The events were presented initially in the light and then in the dark to determine whether infants would remember and use the auditory c…
