Variance Components and Related Methods for Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci
Variance components methods have been used in various aspects of genetic analysis for many decades. This article discusses their application to data on quantitative traits for the estimation of polygenic and environmental variances as well as, for the detection of quantitative trait loci using methods of linkage and association. Multivariate approaches are discussed, along with regression-based related methods. Additionally, examples of the appli…
Genetic and Environmental Contributions to General Cognitive Ability Through the First 16 Years of Life
The genetic and environmental contributions to the development of general cognitive ability throughout the first 16 years of life were examined using sibling data from the Colorado Adoption Project. Correlations were analyzed along with structural equation models to characterize the genetic and environmental influences on longitudinal stability and instability. Intraclass correlations reflected both considerable genetic influence at each age and …
Exploring the genetic etiology of low general cognitive ability from 14 to 36 months
The genetic and environmental etiology of low general cognitive ability (g) during infancy and early childhood has not previously been investigated. The current study examined the genetic etiology of low cognitive ability at 14, 20, 24, and 36 months with twins from the MacArthur Longitudinal Twin Study. Low g groups were formed from the lowest 10th percentile at each age. Univariate probandwise concordance rates and DeFries-Fulker (J. C. DeFries…
Linkage between sexual orientation and chromosome Xq28 in males but not in females
Genetic and environmental influences on cognition during childhood
Rapid assessment of infant predictors of adult IQ: Midtwin-midparent analyses
Infant predictors of adult IQ were assessed with same-sex infant twins (114 pairs) and their parents. The midtwin-midparent design permits the rapid assessment of infant measures to predict later behavior, because the midparent score serves as a proxy for the infant's potential score at maturity. At 5, 7, and 9 months, Ss were observed on the Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence, hand preference, vocalizations, selected Bayley Scales of Infant Devel…
A Five-Factor Nuclear Model of Socially Desirable Responding
We postulate a minimum of five group factors, each representing a specific content area or domain in which deception can be practised. Each group factor is determined by a general deception factor (delta) and a factor specific unto itself. The general factor favors greater sensitivity in females while a given specific factor may favor one gender, the other, or neither. The distinction between contents in general (alpha/gamma) and style (attributi…
