Student-Guided Math Practice in Elementary School
In the current study, we explored math anxiety in the context of a special kind of math practice, one that allowed for some flexibility on the part of the students. Such student-guided math practice is conducive to exploring how math anxiety relates to children’s day-to-day experiences with math, potentially yielding insights into math anxiety that would not be available otherwise. Students in Grades 3 and 4 (N = 26) could choose math problems th…
Inconsistencies in Early Science Education
An analysis of US preschool science standards shows persistent disagreement on what to cover during the preschool years. Such inconsistency hampers progress for science learning and pedagogy, calling for a shared foundation on how to define science in preschool. We propose that children's play in nature can provide the basis for such a shared foundation. Our proposal builds upon both theoretical and practical considerations. Specifically, we deri…
Can playscapes promote early childhood inquiry towards environmentally responsible behaviors? An exploratory study
This paper investigates young children’s exploratory play and inquiry on playscapes: playgrounds specifically designed to connect children with natural environments. Our theoretical framework posits that playscapes combine the benefits of nature and play to promote informal science exploration of natural materials. This, in turn, is expected to lead to environmental science literacy, which in turn is likely to strengthen a child’s ecological iden…
Development of coordination in time estimation
How to best characterize cognitive development? The claim put forward in this article is that development is the improvement of a kind of coordination among a variety of factors. To determine the development of coordination in a cognitive task, children between 4 and 12 years of age and adults participated in a time estimation task: They had to press a button every time they thought a short time interval had passed. The resulting data series of e…
Can a Flow-Network Approach Shed Light on Children's Problem Solving
A complete theory of human behavior must capture both the apparent randomness of behavior (its strong context dependence) as well as its stability (a surprising resistance to changes in behavior despite salient changes in the context). Recent efforts in cognitive science have made important discoveries toward such a theory, emphasizing the idea that skilled behavior seeks to balance overregular tendencies with tendencies that are overrandom. The …

An Exploration of Toddlers' Problems in a Search Task
Toddlers show a surprising lack of knowledge about solidity when they are asked to search for a ball that rolled behind a screen and stopped at a barrier whose top was visible above the screen. They search incorrectly, failing to take into account the position of the barrier. This study examined details of this failure by simplifying the task in 2 ways: by using a search task that did not require children to understand solidity, and by using a pr…
