  • Able and willing

Francis Yuen, Kristi Atkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2025

Young children often encounter unsolvable problems with which they require others' help. To receive adequate assistance, children must be savvy about whom they seek help from: Effective helpers must possess both the ability to help (e.g., competence) and a willingness to do so (e.g., benevolence). Although past work suggests that information about competence and benevolence can inform young children's help-seeking behavior, it remains unclear how…

  • Validation of an open source, remote web‐based eye‐tracking method (WebGazer) for research in early childhood

Open Access•Adrian Steffan, Lucie Zimmer et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2024

Measuring eye movements remotely via the participant's webcam promises to be an attractive methodological addition to in‐person eye‐tracking in the lab. However, there is a lack of systematic research comparing remote web‐based eye‐tracking with in‐lab eye‐tracking in young children. We report a multi‐lab study that compared these two measures in an anticipatory looking task with toddlers using WebGazer.js and jsPsych. Results of our remotely tes…

  • A unified approach to demographic data collection for research with young children across diverse cultures

    Open Access•Lachham Singh, Mihaela D Barokova et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Culture is a key determinant of children's development both in its own right and as a measure of generalizability of developmental phenomena. Studying the role of culture in development requires information about participants' demographic backgrounds. However, both reporting and treatment of demographic data are limited and inconsistent in child development research. A barrier to reporting demographic data in a consistent fashion is that no stand…

  • Social Work for the Twenty-first Century

Francis Yuen, Francis K O Yuen•BOOK•Social Work for the Twenty-first…•2006

This work is a critical analysis of the various aspects of social work education and practice. It argues that social work is still a profession searching for a firm identity and a clear and respectful image. The incorporation of science and scientific approach into social work education and practice appears to be the key for the profession to continue to grow and gain its rightful place in the professional and academic communities. Lastly, this b…

  • The Consequences of Drug Use among Youth and Adolescents

    Open Access•Francis Yuen, Francis K O Yuen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2003

Many academic and professional studies have reported the prevalence of drug abuse among young people and its costly consequences. Sample responses and scenarios from a group of American teens reflect that their perceptions of the consequences are frequently self-oriented and male-centered. Their concerns are often related to health, mental health, sexual performance, and social relations. Implications for interventions are also discussed

  • Impact of Human Diversity Education on Social Work Students

    Open Access•Francis Yuen, Francis K O Yuen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998

This research explores the attitudinal change of undergraduate students in a social work program after completing a course on human diversity. A total of 153 students participated in the study. A cross-sectional pre/post survey design with non-randomized comparison groups was employed in the research. The findings suggest that a course on human diversity had a positive impact on junior level students' attitudes on the topic of diversity and that …
