Capturing the interconnected development of whole number arithmetic operations using a network approach
We used network analysis to examine the structure and development of arithmetic fluency in Chinese students from Grades 3 to 6-a critical period during which fluency across the four operations becomes increasingly integrated. In two preregistered studies, students completed timed fluency tasks in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In Study 1, we compared network structures in Grade 3 ( N = 1,072; M age = 9.1 years) and Grade 6 (…
Effect of Cold Spells and Their Different Definitions on Mortality in Shenzhen, China
A high premium has been put on researching the effects of cold spells because of their adverse influence on people's daily lives and health. The study aimed to find the most appropriate definition of the cold spell in Shenzhen and quantify the impact of cold spells on mortality. Based on the daily mortality data in Shenzhen from 2013 to 2017 and the meteorological and pollutant data from the same period, we quantified the effect of cold spells us…
From integers to fractions
Children display an early sensitivity to implicit proportions (e.g., 1 of 5 apples vs. 3 of 4 apples), but have considerable difficulty in learning the explicit, symbolic proportions denoted by fractions (e.g., "1/5" vs. "3/4"). Theoretically, reducing the gap between representations of implicit versus explicit proportions would improve understanding of fractions, but little is known about how the representations develop and interact with one ano…
Short-Term Effect of Temperature Change on Non-Accidental Mortality in Shenzhen, China
Temperature change is an important meteorological indicator reflecting weather stability. This study aimed to examine the effects of ambient temperature change on non-accidental mortality using diurnal temperature change (DTR) and temperature change between neighboring days (TCN) from two perspectives, intra-day and inter-day temperature change, and further, to explore seasonal variations of mortality, identify the susceptible population and inve…
Association between PM2.5 Exposure and All-Cause, Non-Accidental, Accidental, Different Respiratory Diseases, Sex and Age Mortality in Shenzhen, China
Background : China is at its most important stage of air pollution control. Research on the association between air pollutants and human health is very important and necessary. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between PM 2.5 concentrations and residents' mortality and to compare the effect of PM 2.5 on the different diseases, accidental deaths, sex or age of residents from high polluted areas with less polluted areas. Met…
Association between Airborne Fine Particulate Matter and Residents’ Cardiovascular Diseases, Ischemic Heart Disease and Cerebral Vascular Disease Mortality in Areas with Lighter Air Pollution in China
PM 2.5 increased CVD mortality. The government needs to strengthen the governance of air pollution in areas with a slight pollution
Does the spatial-numerical association of response codes effect depend on digits’ relative or absolute magnitude? Evidence from a perceptual orientation judgment task
Many previous studies have demonstrated the SNARC effect-i.e., participants are faster to respond with their left/right hand to small/large numbers. However, there is a debate on whether it is based on working or long-term memory (i.e., relative or absolute magnitude). Here, we examined the flexibility of the spatial-numerical associations using orientation judgment tasks. Participants were asked to judge the orientation of a rotated frame surrou…
