This article describes a qualitative research study undertaken as a collaboration between museum and occupational therapy (OT) researchers to better understand museum experiences for families with a child or children impacted by autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Inclusion for visitors with ASD is an issue that museums are increasingly considering, and the social dimension of inclusion can be particularly relevant for this audience. The construct of…

    Erin T Barker, Sigan L Hartley et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 3

Raising an adolescent or adult child with a developmental disability confers exceptional caregiving challenges on parents. We also investigated within-…

  • The relative risk and timing of divorce in families of children with an autism spectrum disorder.

Sigan L Hartley, Erin T Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Psychology•2010

We compared the occurrence and timing of divorce in 391 parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a matched representative sample of parents of children without disabilities using a survival analysis. Parents of children with an ASD had a higher rate of divorce than the comparison group (23.5% vs. 13.8%). The rate of divorce remained high throughout the son's or daughter's childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood for paren…

  • Can we differentiate sensory over‐responsivity from anxiety symptoms in toddlers? perspectives of occupational therapists and psychologists

    Open Access•Ayelet Ben‐Sasson, Sharon A Cermak et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2007•References: 24

Suppose a toddler becomes distressed after hearing a loud noise or when getting messy; are these indicators of sensory over‐responsiveness or indicators of anxiety? There is little evidence regarding the distinction between sensory over‐responsivity and anxiety disorders in toddlers. This construct validity study examined differences between occupational therapists' and psychologists' judgments of behaviors as representing sensory processing diso…
