  • New Directions in Geroscience

Lisbeth Nielsen, Anna L Marsland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2024

The “geroscience hypothesis” posits that slowing the physiological processes of aging would lead to delayed disease onset and longer healthspan and lifespan. This shift from a focus on solely treating existing disease to slowing the aging process is a shift toward prevention, including a focus on risk factors found in the social environment. Although geroscience traditionally has focused on the molecular and cellular drivers of biological aging, …

  • The importance of identifying underlying process abnormalities in alexithymia

Open Access•Ryan Smith, Alfred W Kaszniak et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2019

  • Midlife reversibility of early-established biobehavioral risk factors

    Open Access•David Reis, David Reiss et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Objectives: Epidemiological evidence links exposure to early life adversities --such as childhood maltreatment-- with impaired health and wellbeing in adulthood. Since these effects are usually unrecognized or untreated in childhood, preventive and remediating interventions in adults are needed. We asked, first, can we validly ascertain childhood adversity through retrospective assessments in adulthood? Second, what dimensions of childhood advers…

  • Conscientiousness and public health

David Reis, David Reiss et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 7

In this special section, 9 studies and 6 commentaries make a unique contribution to the study of personality. They focus on the five-factor model and, in particular, one of those 5: conscientiousness. This trait has had astonishing success in the actuarial prediction of adaptive outcomes in adulthood and aging, but we have little understanding of the mechanisms that account for this actuarial success. The current studies and comments marshal curr…

  • Affect dynamics, affective forecasting, and aging

Lisbeth Nielsen, Brian Knutson et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2008

Affective forecasting, experienced affect, and recalled affect were compared in younger and older adults during a task in which participants worked to win and avoid losing small monetary sums. Dynamic changes in affect were measured along valence and arousal dimensions, with probes during both anticipatory and consummatory task phases. Older and younger adults displayed distinct patterns of affect dynamics. Younger adults reported increased negat…

  • Awareness of subtle emotional feelings

    Lisbeth Nielsen, Alfred W Kaszniak•ARTICLE•Emotion•2006

The authors explored whether meditation training to enhance emotional awareness improves discrimination of subtle emotional feelings hypothesized to guide decision-making. Long-term meditators and nonmeditators were compared on measures of self-reported valence and arousal, skin conductance response (SCR), and facial electromyography (EMG) to masked and nonmasked emotional pictures, and on measures of heartbeat detection and self-reported emotion…
