  • Comparison of the Toy-Play Behavior of Autistic, Retarded, and Normal Children: A Reanalysis

    Open Access•Barbara J Weiner, Donald R Ottinger et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Tilton and Ottinger (1964) examined differences among autistic, retarded, and normal children by observing their behavior in a toy-play setting. The purpose of this study was to reanalyze these data using a multiple discriminant function analysis, which allowed consideration of all 10 categories of toy play and their intercorrelations within one analysis. Significant differences ( p < .001) were found among the 3 groups and between the possible p…

  • Skill and Chance Orientations as Determiners of Problem-Solving Behavior in Lower- and Middle-Class Children

    Open Access•Gerald E Gruen, Donald R Ottinger•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

This study was an attempt to replicate a previous finding that lower- and middle-class children of the same MA differ in their performance on a partially reinforced three-choice learning task. It was also an attempt to assess the role that skill and chance orientations play in determining this differential performance of social-class groups. The most significant finding of this study was that skill-oriented Ss showed less maximizing (correct resp…

  • Behavior of Human Neonates and Prenatal Maternal Anxiety

    Open Access•Donald R Ottinger, James E Simmons•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1964

A population of obstetrical patients was administered the IPAT Anxiety Scale during each trimester of pregnancy. Nineteen women representing extreme total scores were selected to test the hypothesis that there would be a positive relationship between the mothers' anxiety scores during gestation and neonatal behavior. Body activity and crying behavior were recorded on the second, third, and fourth day of life. Body weight was recorded at birth and…

  • Comparison of the Toy Play Behavior of Autistic, Retarded, and Normal Children

    Open Access•James R Tilton, Donald R Ottinger•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1964

Autistic, mentally retarded, and normal children were observed individually during 20-min. play periods in which they were allowed complete freedom in the selection and use of toys. The observation period was divided into 60 segments and observers recorded which of a number of defined categories of toy uses occurred during each segment. This technique also provided a measure of the number of distinctly different acts comprising S's toy play reper…
