  • Child-Robot Musical Theater for STEAM Education

Open Access•Shuqi YU, Koeun Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Early Childhood Education Journal•2026

Social robots hold unique potential for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education in early childhood through their engaging physical and social presence. However, developmentally appropriate programs integrating social robots for early childhood STEAM education remain limited. To address this, we developed a 7-week child–robot musical theater program featuring four modules (acting, dancing, music/sound, and drawing…

  • Early Media Use Predicts Later Executive Function Difficulties Through Problematic Media Use

Meryem Şeyda Özcan, Yea-Ji Hong et al.•ARTICLE•Media Psychology•2026

Pervasive digital media use in early childhood raises concerns about problematic media use and executive functions. Yet, limited research has examined its long-term predictive effects and bidirectional relations among these factors, leaving predictive pathways unclear. This study analyzed data from 1113 Korean children in the Panel Study on Korean Children, tracking them at ages 6, 9, 10, and 12 years. A cross-lagged panel model examined bidirect…

  • The impact of touchscreen interactivity on U.S. toddlers’ selective attention and learning from digital media

Heather Kirkorian, Heather L Kirkorian et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2022

This study tested the extent to which the presence and relevance of interactive features influence toddlers’ visual attention and learning from videos. Two-year-olds (N = 88) watched an animated bear hide on video and then searched for a bear sticker on a corresponding felt board. To watch the bear hide, toddlers watched without touching the screen (non-interactive condition), touched a relevant part of the screen (the bear; relevant condition), …

  • Preschoolers' beliefs about media technologies

Open Access•Carla Macias, Koeun Choi•ARTICLE•Human Behavior and Emerging…•2021

Although a vast majority of U.S. children have access to mobile media such as smartphones at home, children from lower-income families spend more time using screen media than do their higher-income peers. Differences in early media experiences based on family income may influence how children think about media technologies. This study examined whether preschoolers' thinking about media varies by family income, with a focus on children's beliefs a…

  • Attempting to break the fourth wall

Open Access•Karl S Rosengren, Heather Kirkorian et al.•ARTICLE•Human Behavior and Emerging…•2021

Young children sometimes perform actions not afforded by the environmental context that they are currently in. Anecdotal reports and past research have suggested that young children sometimes attempt to perform actions with screen media that they cannot perform successfully given the constraints of the media. These behaviors have been defined as a type of action error we refer to as media errors. We report on two studies that examined the nature …

  • Sesame Street

Koeun Choi•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2021

  • Factors associated with low tuberculosis preventive therapy prescription rates among health care workers in rural South Africa

Open Access•Amiya A Ahmed, Megan Grammatico et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2021

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive rollout of tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) in South Africa to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis among people living with HIV (PWH), rates of initiation and completion have remained suboptimal. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify factors associated with low TPT prescription rates among health care workers (HCWs) in rural South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous 39-it…

  • Drawing across media

    Open Access•Heather Kirkorian, Heather L Kirkorian et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Young children's growing access to touchscreen technology represents one of many contextual factors that may influence development. The focus of the current study was the impact of traditional versus electronic drawing materials on the quality of children's drawings during the preschool years. Young children (2-5 years, N = 73) and a comparison group of adults ( N = 24) copied shapes using three mediums: marker on paper, stylus on touchscreen tab…

  • American parents’ active engagement mediates the impact of background television on toddlers’ play

Heather Kirkorian, Koeun Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2019

This secondary analysis examined the extent to which parent engagement mediates the impact of adult-directed background television (BTV) on toddlers’ toy play. Fifty-one children (12, 24, 36 mos) played in a furnished observation lab for 30 min without BTV and 30 min with BTV (order counterbalanced across participants). Parents were instructed to act as they normally would during leisure time. The findings revealed an indirect negative effect of …

  • Associations Between Toddlers' Naturalistic Media Experience and Observed Learning from Screens

Open Access•Heather Kirkorian, Heather L Kirkorian et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2017

Using secondary analysis, researchers examined associations between two‐year‐olds' ( N = 135) naturalistic use of interactive and noninteractive media with performance on a screen‐based learning task. Parents reported the number of minutes that children spent the previous day doing nine media‐related activities (e.g., watching television, playing handheld videogames). The object‐retrieval task required children to watch a hiding event on video an…
