Analyzing the Dynamics of Auditory Distraction Using Multigroup Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling
Advanced Structural Equation Models (SEMs) have gained popularity in recent years, but they are rarely applied in experimental psychology. We illustrate how analyzing longitudinal phenomena in repeated-measures experiments using SEM can enhance understanding of trial-level dynamics and fundamental cognitive processes. Previous work shows that children exposed to novel sounds during a visual task display increased response times in that trial and …
Maximizing learning
During a lesson, children must pay attention to relevant information while they also have to ignore distractors. This study investigated attention in 36 neurotypical children ( M = 8.5 years; 19 female, 17 male; 36 White) during the lesson with lesson-related decorations, with unrelated decorations, and with empty walls. Overt attention was recorded via eye-tracking glasses. Postlesson learning was measured directly after the lesson and 1 week la…
On the relationship of arousal and attentional distraction by emotional novel sounds
Unexpected and task-irrelevant sounds can impair performance in a task. It has been shown that highly arousing emotional distractor sounds impaired performance less compared to moderately arousing neutral distractor sounds. The present study tests whether these differential emotion-related distraction effects are directly related to an enhancement of arousal evoked by processing of emotional distractor sounds. We disentangled costs of orienting o…
Salient omissions—pupil dilation in response to unexpected omissions of sound and touch
In combination with previous omission studies using EEG, the findings demonstrate predictive models in brain processing and point to the involvement of subcortical structures in the omission response. Our pupillometry approach is especially suitable to study sensory prediction in vulnerable populations within the psychiatric field
Distraction by emotional sounds
Unexpectedly occurring task-irrelevant stimuli have been shown to impair performance. They capture attention away from the main task leaving fewer resources for target processing. However, the actual distraction effect depends on various variables; for example, only target-informative distractors have been shown to cause costs of attentional orienting. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that high arousing emotional distractors, as compared wi…
