Co‐Regulation Within Adolescent Friendships
Friendships assume an increasingly important role in socialization during adolescence, with the potential to help shape how youth cope with negative emotions and stressors. Extending theory and research on co‐rumination among friends, this study sought to examine an alternative novel socialization process within friendships—co‐reappraisal—that is hypothesized to promote healthier socioemotional adjustment in adolescents. Adolescents ( N = 330; M …
Peer victimization across the school years
Social goals (i.e., objectives that individuals aim to attain or avoid in their peer relationships through their actions; Emmons, 1996; Parkhurst & Asher, 1985) are important for a variety of adjustment outcomes, but little is known about the factors that foster them. Exposure to peer victimization, either at a young and formative age or as a long-term burden, has a significant impact on how youth negotiate their social world, and may alter socia…
Social and Environmental Predictors of Youth Alcohol and Cannabis Initiation Risk
BACKGROUND: The social and local-home environment impacts youth's likelihood of early substance use initiation (SUI). Yet, it is unknown whether protective or risk factors are salient for all forms of youth SUI, or may be specific to certain substances (e.g., alcohol, cannabis). Additionally, certain family factors - such as having a family history of SUD (FH+)-may exacerbate risk for and mitigate protection from alcohol (AUI) and cannabis (CUI) …
The Interplay Between Negative Alcohol Expectancies and Locus of Control and Its Association with Motivation to Change Alcohol Use Among Repeat Alcohol-Impaired Drivers
Background Alcohol-impaired driving is a costly public health problem with a high rate of recidivism. Objectives This investigation aimed to examine the associations among negative alcohol expectancies (NAE), locus of control (LoC), and motivation to reduce alcohol use among repeat alcohol-impaired drivers. Methods Fifty-nine participants with ≥ 2 previous driving under the influence (DUI) arrests were recruited from a correctional treatment facili…
Emotional clarity and responses to peer victimization as predictors of youth aggression
During the transition to middle school, difficulties understanding and identifying emotions may place youth at risk for maladaptive responses to peer victimization. In turn, maladaptive responses to victimization may increase the likelihood of engaging in aggressive behaviors. In a prospective, multi-informant study of 636 youth (338 girls; M age in fourth grade = 9.94 years; 66.7% White; 34.75% receiving subsidized lunch) from fourth to sixth gr…
Additive and Moderating Effect of Parents and Friends on Health and Behavior Outcomes During Emerging Adulthood
Relationships with parents and friends may work together to increase the risk of adjustment problems in emerging adulthood. However, it is still undetermined if social relationships act in an additive (i.e., serve as unique predictors) or moderating (i.e., interact with other predictors) fashion. In a cross-sectional sample of 859 female college students ( M age = 19.53, SD = 1.49; 73.9% White) from a large university in the south-central United …
The age‐varying effects of adolescent stress on impulsivity and sensation seeking
Adolescence is defined in part by heightened exposure and sensitivity to stressors. In a longitudinal cohort of youth at risk for substance use problems, we examined the age-varying relationship between stress exposure and traits that are central to the dual systems model. The positive associations between stress exposure, impulsivity, sensation seeking varied as function of age. Specifically, the influence of stress exposure on impulsivity stren…
