Differences Between Black and White Elementary School Children's Orientations Toward Alcohol and Cocaine: A Three-Study Comparison
To trace the origins of race differences in substance use, this study examined differences between Black and White elementary school children's knowledge of alcohol and cocaine, beliefs about their short-and long-term effects, and attitudes toward and intentions to use them across three independent samples (N = 181, N = 287, N = 234). Black children were more negatively oriented toward alcohol and cocaine than White children from an early age. Mo…
A Characterization of Children's Intuitive Theories of Drug Action
In an attempt to devise a methodology for characterizing children's intuitive theories of drug action, 217 children in Grades 1 to 6 were interviewed about how two substances, alcohol and cocaine, cause behavioral changes in their users. Measures tapped both structure (Piagetian complexity of causal reasoning, coherence, and construction of a causal explanatory framework with nodes, links, and causal mechanisms) and content (a relevant biological…

Maternal correlates of infant temperament ratings and of infant-mother attachment: A longitudinal study
This study examined longitudinally correlates of mothers' ratings of their infant's temperament and of the infant-mother attachment relationship. Measures included Carey's Revised Infant Temperament Questionnaire, child-rearing attitudes, psychophysiological responses to an unfamiliar infant's crying pre- and postdelivery, psychophysiological responses to the mother's own infant's crying, and assessments of infant-mother attachment. The results i…

Maternal correlates of stability and change in infant-mother attachment
The relations between maternal control style, sensitivity, and childrearing attitudes on one hand and the stability of the infant-mother attachment relationship on the other were examined in a sample of 38 mother-infant dyads. The mother-child pairs were observed during a structured play session and in Ainsworth's Strange Situation when the infants were 12 and 20 months old, a developmental period characterized by increased autonomous functioning…
Maternal control style and the mastery motivation of one-year-olds
Forty-one mothers and their 12-month-old infants participated in a study of the effects of maternal control style on infant mastery motivation. Three scales were designed to assess maternal control style during a mother-infant play session. Mastery motivation was assessed in an experimenter-administered structured toy play procedure. Three components, persistence, competence, and affect, comprised the measure of mastery motivation. Mothers also c…
Determinants of attachment and mastery motivation in infants born to adolescent mothers
Thirty mothers aged 14–19 and their approximately one-year-old babies participated in this study of the influence of the social support network and stress on infant-mother attachment and on mastery motivation. During the home visit the mothers completed a demographic questionnaire, the Psychosocial Kinship Inventory and the Life Events Stress Scale. In the laboratory the infants' mastery motivation and infant-mother attachment were assessed. A di…
