  • Developing intellectual humility

Open Access•Kristina Musholt, Samuel Ronfard et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2026

This article presents an overview and critique of current interdisciplinary research on the nature and development of intellectual humility (IH), with the aim of systematically outlining currently debated open questions. We focus on four specific areas of research: (1) theoretical questions regarding the nature of IH, (2) issues with the measurement of IH in development, (3) existing research on the development of IH and related socio-cognitive a…

  • Teachers’ intellectual humility benefits adolescents’ interest and learning

Tenelle Porter, Mark R Leary et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2026•Cited by: 1

The expression of intellectual humility-publicly admitting confusion, ignorance, and mistakes-can benefit individuals, but can it also benefit others? Five studies tested the hypothesis that teachers' expressions of intellectual humility would boost U.S. students' motivation and engagement in learning. In two pilot studies (one preregistered, combined N = 231), adults (50% women; 58% White, 25% Black) and adolescents (48% girls; 53% White, 33% Hi…

  • Fallibility Salience Increases Intellectual Humility

Open Access•Jonah Koetke, Karina Schumann et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2023

The spread of online political misinformation has ramifications for political polarization, trust in political systems, and the functioning of democracy. In this article, we advance findings on investigative behaviors—actions aimed at determining the veracity of information encountered online—in response to political misinformation. Across three preregistered studies ( N = 889), we find that investigative behaviors increase accuracy discernment o…

  • Did It Work? Reflections and Five Humble Questions to Guide Assessment

    Open Access•Tenelle Porter•ARTICLE•Journal of Education•2022

Assessments often fail to clearly answer whether a program “worked” or not. Here, I reflect on the broader purpose of assessment, and offer five questions to consider before undertaking an evaluation: Who are you trying to help? What is the intervention? How will you measure effects? Compared to What? and When will you measure effects? This reflection demonstrates that assessments can reveal more than whether a program worked and provides recomme…

  • Intellectual Humility Predicts Scrutiny of Covid-19 Misinformation

Open Access•Jonah Koetke, Karina Schumann et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2022

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been felt across the globe. While health experts work to spread life-saving information, misinformation and fake news about the virus undermine these efforts. What actions can people take when confronting COVID-19 misinformation, and what factors motivate people to take these actions? We propose that people can engage in investigative behaviors (e.g., fact-checking, seeking alternative opinions) to scruti…

  • Trust in science increases conservative support for social distancing

    Open Access•Jonah Koetke, Karina Schumann et al.•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates adherence to scientifically supported prevention strategies, such as social distancing. Although most Americans support social distancing, a subset of conservatives reject the scientific consensus on this matter. We explored why some conservatives reject social distancing, focusing on how trust in science contributes to ideological differences in social distancing intentions. In two studies, we replicated recent…

  • Changing Learner Beliefs in South African Townships

Open Access•Tenelle Porter, Ammaarah Martinus et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2020

We tested the effectiveness of a growth mindset intervention for N = 354 adolescents from low resource schools in the Western Cape, South Africa. Growth mindset measures demonstrated good psychometric properties in our sample. We found mixed evidence of an intervention effect: We did not find evidence that the intervention improved mastery behavior or math achievement test scores, but treatment-on-the-treated (TOT) analyses showed positive effect…

  • Wisdom Through Adversity

Open Access•Tenelle Porter, Greg Gardiner et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Value Inquiry•2019

  • Intellectual humility and openness to the opposing view

Tenelle Porter, Karina Schumann•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2017

Strong disagreements have stymied today’s political discourse. We investigate intellectual humility – recognizing the limits of one’s knowledge and appreciating others’ intellectual strengths – as one factor that can make disagreements more constructive. In Studies 1 and 2, participants with higher intellectual humility were more open to learning about the opposition’s views during imagined disagreements. In Study 3, those with higher intellectua…

  • Youth Entrepreneurship

Open Access•William Damon, Kendall Cotton Bronk et al.•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2015

Entrepreneurship is critical to job creation and economic growth in the United States and abroad; however, interest in pursuing entrepreneurial careers is on the decline among young people today. As a means of designing programs that effectively encourage and prepare young people to pursue entrepreneurial careers, this essay calls for increased focus on how entrepreneurs develop. An understanding of the experiences, opportunities, and interests t…

  • Fostering Youth Entrepreneurship

Open Access•G John Geldhof, Tenelle Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Entrepreneurship offers a viable and proven pathway to economic growth and personal fulfillment. However, the number of individuals engaged in entrepreneurial behaviors remains low. This discrepancy between entrepreneurial attitudes and action underscores the need for programs that foster the development of entrepreneurship in today's youth. We argue that a relational developmental systems approach can help researchers understand and facilitate t…

  • Attachment Predicts Adolescent Conversions at Young Life Religious Summer Camps

Sarah A Schnitker, Tenelle Porter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The correspondence hypothesis maintains that people with secure parental attachments will experience gradual religious conversions, with internal working models of childhood attachment figures forming the basis of attachment to God. The compensation hypothesis predicts that people with insecure attachments will experience sudden and dramatic conversions as they seek a relationship with God to compensate for insecure attachment relationships. In S…

  • Counterintuitiveness in Folktales

Justin L Barrett, Emily Burdett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cognition and Culture•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 7

The present study sought to (1) determine whether Barrett's counterintuitiveness coding and quantifying scheme (CI-Scheme) could be applied to cultural materials with sufficient intercoder reliability, (2) provide evidence concerning just how counterintuitive is too counterintuitive for a concept to be a recurrent cultural idea, and (3) test whether counterintuitive intentional agent concepts are more common in folktales than other classes of cou…
