Emotion word production tasks grant insight into the development of emotion word organization and accessibility
Children are often instructed to "use their words" to communicate their emotions, which requires them to quickly access words that best describe their feelings. Adults vary in their ability to bring both nonemotion and emotion words to mind (two capacities called verbal fluency and emotion fluency ). However, no studies have examined how emotion fluency emerges across development, despite the fact that mastering emotion language is an important d…
Early and later susceptibility to effects of parenting
This study tests Frankenhuis and Panchanathan's (2011) evolutionary commitment hypothesis by examining individual differences in susceptibility to the effects of parenting during early and late childhood. Drawing from the Future of Families and Child Well-Being Study ( N = 4,898; 2,342 girls; White/Black/Latinx/other = 590/1,601/813/261) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Developme…
State-level variation in the prevalence of child psychopathology symptoms in the US
Objective To estimate the prevalence of clinically meaningful youth mood , anxiety, behavioral, and attention symptoms across US states. Method Data are drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study baseline wave, which included 11,876 children ages 9–10. Statistical weighting strategies generated projected state-specific prevalence estimates for the 17 states where ABCD collected data based on state socio-demographics. Twent…
Perceptual sensitivity to labeling stereotyped emotion expressions
This study investigates (a) age-related differences in how the intensity of stereotyped facial expressions influence the emotion label children, adolescents, and adults assign to that face and (b) how this perceptual sensitivity relates to subclinical symptoms of psychopathology. In 2015-2016, 184 participants aged 4-25 years viewed posed stereotypes of angry, fearful, sad, and happy expressions morphed with neutral expressions at 10%-90% intensi…
Feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of group antenatal care in Senegalese health posts
Almost all pregnant women in Senegal receive some antenatal care (ANC), yet only around half receive four or more visits and provision of education and counselling during ANC is often inadequate and, in some cases, non-existent. This results in missed opportunities to provide support and to counsel women regarding appropriate care-seeking practices and health behaviours during pregnancy and across the continuum of care. This pilot effectiveness–i…
