The Perception of References to Disability in the Bible
Readers were invited to offer their perception of 42 brief extracts referring to disability drawn from the Bible. A total of 103 respondents, of whom approximately 20% had a permanent physical disability, completed this task. Overall, the responses indicated that only 39.3% of the selected extracts were regarded as projecting a favourable perception of the concept of disability. Respondents with a disability themselves reacted least favourably. O…

In response to the needs of people with a disability, the contemporary Christian church has adopted policies and programmes directed towards acceptance and inclusion in the mainstream environment. With regard to people with a disability, texts of the Christian gospels can be interpreted as carrying mixed messages. While there are passages of comfort and acceptance, there are others which seemingly link disability with moral imperfection, as punis…

In two retroactive inhibition experiments (N = 112, N = 72, respectively) using the free-recall paradigm, memorized two successive lists of nouns and completed a retention test in which they recalled either the first or both lists. Ss who during learning trials used the same retrieval strategy on the first and second lists remembered less of the first list than Ss who used different strategies on both lists. Ss who recalled both lists on the rete…
