A Norwegian curriculum reform
Collective and individual efficacy as predictors of disruptive classroom behavior
Disruptive behavior is a significant challenge in classrooms, impairing learning and leading to teacher demotivation and stress. Self-efficacy among school staff is crucial for managing disruptive behavior; however, to address this issue, it is necessary to consider collective efficacy as a vital factor in fostering a supportive school culture. This study investigates the relationship between collective and self-efficacy, as perceived by teachers…
Externalizing problems and reward–punishment sensitivity
Temperament is closely linked to externalizing problems during adolescence, but the possible interrelationships between them remain unresolved. Reinforcement sensitivity theory proposes that sensitivity to reward modulated by the behavioral activation system (BAS), and sensitivity to punishment modulated by the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), influence how certain kinds of reinforcements shape adolescents' behaviors. A study by Ramer et al. (…
Individual differences in students’ approach and avoidance sensitivity as predictors of academic progression during elementary school
Achievement Motives, Self-Efficacy, Achievement Goals, and Academic Achievement at Multiple Stages of Education
Achievement Motives, Self-Efficacy, Achievement Goals, and Academic Achievement at Multiple Stages of Education
The present study investigated the joint effects of achievement motives, self-efficacy, and achievement goals as predictors of subsequent academic achievement among educational science students. A longitudinal research design allowed for measurement of motivational variables at several stages of education during bachelor courses (subsequent to the introductory courses), firstly by measuring achievement motives, secondly by self-efficacy and achie…
A Randomized Effectiveness Trial of Brief Parent Training
Objective: To examine the follow-up effectiveness of brief parent training (BPT) for children with emerging or existing conduct problems. Method: With the use of a randomized controlled trial and parent and teacher reports, this study examined the effectiveness of BPT compared to regular services 6 months after the end of the intervention. Participants included 216 children (3–12 years) and parents randomly assigned to BPT or a comparison group. …
Psychometric Properties of the Scores on the Behavioral Inhibition and Activation Scales in a Sample of Norwegian Children
The primary aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the scores on a version for children of the Carver and White Behavioral Inhibition and Activation scales (the BIS—BAS scales). This involved administering the BIS—BAS scales, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised—Abbreviated, and the Achievement Motives Scale to a population of 661 Norwegian sixth graders. The find…
Motivation and Temporal Distance
The implications of temporal distance on motivation-related concepts were examined. The results of an experiment, based on 585 Grade 6 students, indicated that both positive (approach) and negative (avoidance) motivation increased as the future goal or event approached in time. This increase in approach and avoidance motivation influenced the performance of the pupils differently. For pupils with success orientation, the performance increased. Fo…
Future Time Orientation and Temperament
The present study combines Lykken's theory about the role of reward sensitivity and punishment insensitivity in the development of antisocial behavior with Gjesme's theory of future time orientation. 158 adolescents comprised a target group of 79 adolescents who had defined behavioral problems and a matched referential group of 79 adolescents who did not have notable behavioral problems. The results suggest that attributes related to primary psyc…
Dispositions Related to Sensitivity in the Neurological Basis for Activation of Approach-Avoidance Motivation, Antisocial Attributes and Individual Differences in Aggressive Behavior
During the last 30 years, social learning theory has been at the theoretical forefront of research on development of antisocial behavior. Only a few studies have focused on temperamental factors that underlie, determine, and maintain antisocial behavior. Some of these studies suggest that high approach-reward drive, weak fear-motivation and weak punishmentinsensitivity constitute a critical mix of temperamental variables associated with aggressiv…
