  • Writing the Convent in New France: The Colonialist Rhetoric of Canadian Nuns

    Thomas Carr, Thomas H Carr•ARTICLE•Quebec Studies•2009

Most writing by women that has survived from before the fall of New France—perhaps most writing by women during that period—was done by nuns in the seven communities founded before 1763: the Ursulines, the Hôtel-Dieu, and the Hôpital-Général in Québec; the Ursulines of Trois-Rivières; the Hôtel-Dieu and two uncloistered institutes, the Congrégation de Notre-Dame and Sisters of Charity of Marguerite d’Youville in Montreal. While the nuns wrote abo…

  • When High-Powered People Fail: Working Memory and “Choking Under Pressure” in Math

    Open Access•Sian L Beilock, Thomas H Carr•ARTICLE•Psychological Science•2005

We examined the relation between pressure-induced performance decrements, or “choking under pressure,” in mathematical problem solving and individual differences in working memory capacity. In cognitively based academic skills such as math, pressure is thought to harm performance by reducing the working memory capacity available for skill execution. Results demonstrated that only individuals high in working memory capacity were harmed by performa…

  • Development of selective attention: Perceptual load influences early versus late attentional selection in children and adults

    Cynthia L Huang-Pollock, Cynthia Huang‐Pollock et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 41

The moderating effect of perceptual load on visual selective attention was examined in 2 studies. In Study 1, children and young adults searched displays of varying set size flanked by irrelevant distractors. Children's performance was as efficient as adults' under conditions of high but not low loads, suggesting that early selection engages rapidly maturing neural systems and late selection engages later-maturing systems. In Study 2, 4 age group…

  • On the fragility of skilled performance: What governs choking under pressure?

    Sian L Beilock, Thomas H Carr•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental…•2001

Experiments 1-2 examined generic knowledge and episodic memories of putting in novice and expert golfers. Impoverished episodic recollection of specific putts among experts indicated that skilled putting is encoded in a procedural form that supports performance without the need for step-by-step attentional control. According to explicit monitoring theories of choking, such proceduralization makes putting vulnerable to decrements under pressure. E…

  • Cognitive Abilities, Conditions of Learning, and the Early Development of Reading Skill

Mary Ann Evans, Thomas H Carr•ARTICLE•Reading Research Quarterly•1985•Cited by: 5

TWO GROUPS of primary-grade classrooms differing in their instructional approach to beginning reading were compared to assess the relationship between learning activities, cognitive abilities, and reading skill. Students' activities in 20 classrooms were observed, confirming that half of the classrooms followed an individualized language-experience approach and half a decoding-oriented basal reader approach. Year-end testing of the students revea…

  • "Marivaux's Jeu de L'Amour et "De La Raison

Thomas Carr, Thomas H Carr•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•1984

At a crucial point in the third act of Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard, Silvia declares that she requires a battle in Dorante between love and reason: "je veux un combat entre I'amour et la raison," a struggle her brother Mario suggests will be to the death. In fact, the work's entire action, not just the last act, can playfully be renamed Le Jeu de l'amour et "de la raison," and while it is possible to read Dorante's eventual proposal of marriage…

  • Perceptions of community life which distinguish between participants and nonparticipants in a neighborhood self‐help organization

    Open Access•Thomas H Carr, Michael C Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1976•Cited by: 7•References: 3

Questionnaire, Edwards-Kirkpatrick scale, and semantic differential techniques were used to provide converging measures of psychosocial factors affecting participation in a community self-help organization. This group is attempting to maintain the racially mixed residential character of a neighborhood located in a zone of transition between large tracts of project housing and an area of stores, apartment buildings, and offices on the edge of a so…

  • An ecologically oriented approach to youth deviance

    Open Access•Thomas H Carr, Thomas P Cooke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1976•References: 8

In recent years the social problems of youth have been described in terms of delinquency and alienation. Social intervention programs with youth, however, have tended to focus only on the overt disruptive behavior of delinquency. These programs have been disappointingly unsuccessful, perhaps because of their overly narrow conceptual orientation. This paper reviews some of the major theories of delinquency from an ecological perspective, and relat…
