  • Prospective Relations Between Self‐Concept and Adolescent Physical Education Participation: A Sex Stratified Analysis

Open Access•Kelsey Sick, Eva Pila et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2025

Introduction Sustained participation in physical education classes during adolescence can help promote lifelong engagement in physical activity, which is vital for the physical and mental health of adolescents. Self‐concept, particularly in the domains of global and physical appearance self‐perceptions, has been identified as a key predictor of physical activity behavior. However, there is limited understanding of how these facets influence conti…

  • Associations among negative weight‐related experiences, weight bias internalization, and body‐related self‐conscious emotions in adolescents: A daily diary study

    Open Access•Kristen M Lucibello, Catherine M Sabiston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2025

INTRODUCTION: The present study examined the between- and within-person associations among negative weight-related experiences, weight bias internalization, and body shame, embarrassment, and pride in adolescents. METHODS: = 15.54, 59.10% girls, 40.86% white) who completed a 5-day daily diary study in 2021. Multilevel models were estimated to examine the between- and within-person associations, as well as the cross-level interactions. RESULTS: Fi…

  • Bidirectional associations between sleep duration and emotion dysregulation across adolescence

Jenna D Gilchrist, Jessica Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2023

Throughout adolescence, both sleep and emotion regulation abilities undergo significant developmental changes. The maturational systems that govern sleep and emotion regulation are closely intertwined leading many researchers to posit a mutually reinforcing relationship. Although there is support for a bidirectional relationship among adults, empirical support for reciprocal relationships among adolescents is lacking. Given the notable developmen…

  • Sampling sports during adolescence, exercise behaviour in adulthood, and the mediating role of perceived variety in exercise

    Benjamin D Sylvester, Jenna D Gilchrist et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2020

Objective: Physical activity levels decline from adolescence to adulthood, but participation in a variety of sports during childhood and adolescence (i.e., sampling) may increase physical activity behaviour during adulthood. We examined the association between sampling sports during adolescence and moderate-vigorous exercise behaviour in adulthood, and we assessed whether this relationship is mediated by perceived variety in exercise. Design: Stu…

  • Associations between Physical Self-Concept and Anticipated Guilt and Shame: The Moderating Role of Gender

    Open Access•Jenna D Gilchrist, Shauna Solomon‐kraku et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Roles•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 7

  • Associations between actual and ideal self-perceptions and anticipated pride among young adults

    Open Access•Jenna D Gilchrist, Catherine M Sabiston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Social…•2019

This study examined associations between actual and ideal fitness-related self-discrepancies and anticipated pride. Participants (N = 130) read a hypothetical scenario and were asked to anticipate their feelings of pride and provide reports of actual and ideal self-perceptions. Actual and ideal selves accounted for 29% of the variance in anticipated pride. The congruence between actual and ideal selves was positively, linearly associated with ant…

  • When a sense of “we” shapes the sense of “me”: Exploring how groups impact running identity and behavior

M Blair Evans, Colin D Mclaren et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2018

Whereas running is an inherently independent form of exercise, it is often a social endeavor conducted in groups. We tested how group membership and social contexts were associated with running identities and behavior. In Study 1, 103 running group members read vignettes where they imagined training on their own or within their group. Group imagery participants reported stronger running identities and this effect was primarily evident among femal…
