  • Rethinking UN peace and security engagements in a changing world

Open Access•Sara Hellmüller, Fanny Badache et al.•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2026

World politics is changing. The post-Cold War unipolar system is being replaced by a multipolar world order that is characterized by increased geopolitical competition and contestation of the liberal international order. Authored by a combination of International Relations and peace scholars, policy-makers, and practitioners, this policy paper identifies four main processes through which this shifting context influences United Nations peace opera…

  • Resisting subjugation

Open Access•I Fraihat, Hamid Dabashi•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2024

In 2002, Israel started the construction of a 708-kilometer wall to control the Palestinian territories. The Wall offered a massive canvas, which the Palestinians used to develop graffiti and murals. The artwork and graffiti are location-specific, ephemeral, transitory, and unstable. This paper aims to document, archive, and analyze discourse and themes emerging from the artwork that developed on the Wall between 2018 and 2022. The analysis of th…

  • The Lasting Impact of Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’ on the Question of Palestine

    Open Access•I Fraihat, Basem Ezbidi•ARTICLE•Middle East Critique•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 17

In 2017 US President Donald Trump launched the 'Deal of the Century' (DoC) to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Although Trump is no longer in office, the impact of the DoC lingers and will continue affecting future approaches to the conflict and its resolution. This article argues that the Trump DoC profoundly impacted the colonial order in Palestine, destroying further the illusion that a just settlement addressing the plight of the Palesti…

  • The Palestinian Economic Disengagement Plan from Israel

    Open Access•I Fraihat•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The Palestinian Authority (PA), frustrated by the one-sided and zero-sum plan to end the Israeli–Palestinian conflict presented by former US President Donald Trump, has escalated efforts to diminish its reliance on Israel. In particular, the PA responded with plans to disengage from the Israeli economy and become more self-sufficient. This course of action has become known as the Economic Disengagement Plan (EDP). This paper explores the likeliho…

  • Unfinished Revolutions

    I Fraihat•BOOK•Unfinished Revolutions•2020

Post-revolution states often find that once a transition process begins, challenges can arise, such as political polarization and the threat of civil war. A respected commentator on Middle Eastern politics, Ibrahim Fraihat compares three countries grappling with political transitions in the wake of the Arab Spring: Yemen, Libya, and Tunisia. Fraihat argues that to attain enduring peace and stability, post-revolution states must engage in inclusiv…

  • Superpower and Small-State Mediation in the Qatar Gulf Crisis

    Open Access•I Fraihat•ARTICLE•The International Spectator•2020

The Qatar Gulf crisis of 2017 saw a number of mediation initiatives, including those of the United States and Kuwait. However, the two countries present two substantially distinct models of third-party intervention: superpower mediation (the United States) and small-state mediation (Kuwait). Comparing the two types of intervention in this crisis in terms of their ability to de-escalate tension and effectively resolve the Gulf crisis with respect …

  • Evolving Trends in the Post-Arab Spring Era

    Open Access•I Fraihat, Taha Yaseen•ARTICLE•Journal of Peacebuilding &…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 6

The uprisings connected to the Arab Spring have thus far failed to produce social change. The dynamics of these uprisings instead generated a number of trends that are likely to continue to destabilise the Arab world and prevent peace and development. Prevailing trends in the post-Arab Spring era include the prevalence of counter revolutions, widespread violence and armed conflicts, new patterns of alliances, external interventions and thriving p…
